Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that might be the case since the stuff dies with the first frost. I've already wounded it with crabgrass killer, but the stuff is tough. My plan now is to weed eat the stuff about a week after I apply regular Roundup selectively and then slit the ground in those areas and reseed while there is still time. Sound like a reasonable plan?

Scalping will suffice (that's all I did), and this is the one time it might make sense to bag it. I didn't want all that lawn trash sitting on the soil surface when I seeded, and there was a lot of it. You can certainly take a rake to the lawn if you like, but it's overkill. I did it in one or two very thick areas and can't say I noticed any real difference when done. Certainly the seeding went the same way there as anywhere else. While Round Up is not technically recommended too close to planting or seeding, I did some touching up just before seeding (literally, put down the sprayer and pick up the grass seed). Seed isn't susceptible to Round Up, and by the time it sprouts the stuff is already deactivated in the soil. RU's root activity is limited, and usually requires that it ran off or you spilled a little, which then got diluted. Even so, a few days sees that soil-bound. I'm presuming you're going to Round Up a second time (if necessary), let it work, scalp again, then plant. That won't be an issue.

Ive sprayed roundup on a large crabgrass plant and then threw tall fescue seeds onto it seconds later. By the time the crabgrass started to die, the fescue was germinating and taking advantage of the cover that the dying crabgrass plant provided.

pfar54, I dropped the ball on this back when. Watering every day will encourage most weed seed to germinate. So does leaving bare spots or mowing too short. The best way to water is deeply and infrequently. Simply doing that will prevent many (MANY) weeds. That is until Mother Nature sends you a week of rainy weather. But MN gets it right most of the time with Her deep infrequent rain storms. For irrigation purposes, deep means 1 inch all at one time. Infrequent means no more than once per week (5-7 days) in the hottest heat of the Ohio summer. For cooler weather you can back off on the frequency to every 2 weeks, then 3 weeks, and when the temps fall below 70 degrees, water more like once per month until dormancy.
