Red flowering bush: Can you name it?

I rode past this bush today in my Berkeley, Calif. neighborhood. It's flowering now in mid-February. I'd like to identify it. Can you help? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Appears to be Chaenomeles speciosa.

A very early bloomer - also flowering here in the UK for a few weeks now.

Thanks all for your responses. It's just in our back garden in Surrey. It is south facing and the weather is scorching at the moment so that may explain the bloom. We've just moved in to this house and inherited this lovely garden so I don't know how this plant usually fares. I will do my best to look after it! Thanks all.

I save seed from Astilbes and also grow them from seed. Snip off the seed head when it is brown, then place it on a paper plate inside to dry further. When it is dry I usually run my fingers along the stem to remove the "pods", or tap the seed head on the paper plate. The seeds are like dust. I then wintersow them. One thing-they might not come true from seed but it is fun to see what you get:-) Rhonda

Thank you so much,, both, I am so happy to finally know the name! It was a really stunning bush, right near a bridge at the end of King William road in San Antonio, if anyone wants to go and see. After reading all about it, ( drought tolerant, attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, I want it more than ever! I will be pestering the local nursery to get it for me :-). Thank you again!

has sporadic long thorns.. it will need serious pruning AWAY from that walkway ...

and start the 3 year process ...

one of my faves on 5 acres [can get rather large.. and not suited to small gardens ... wide i mean.. not that tall] .. because its so early.. and so intense in color .... most of the very early flowers are pale ... not this one ....

and.. apple like fruits in late summer.. that with 50 pounds of sugar.. will make a jelly ... [as would my boot with 50 pounds of sugar.. lol] ... for a real taste sensation .... try biting into one straight from the plant ... lol ...

" ....not suited to small gardens ...". it makes an excellent wall shrub. That's how I grow mine.
