Why would I try to rid my lawn of this weed?

Forgive my ignorance - I'm new to lawn ownership and have a question I was hoping someone could help with.

I have a patch of weeds in my backyard that I like, and I'm wondering if there's any real reason to discourage their presence. We have a lawn of St. Augustine grass, and these grow in it. They are small plants - I've never seen one larger than a fifty-cent piece. The leaves are blade-like and a similar color to St. Augustine grass and radiant in a spiral from the center - sort of like a rosette. The have tiny, white, four petaled flowers that close up at night. The weed is very low to the ground and seems to require a lot less mowing than the grass. Why would I not want to encourage its growth in my yard? Does it die out in the winter? Is it poisonous? Based on looks alone, I like it a lot better than the St. Augustine's grass.

If I can figure out how, I'll post a photo. Thanks!
