non astringent persimmon taste differences
Comments (2)I have hana Fuyu , It tastes a bit different than the Fuyu I buy from the store. This can be due to the climate, Fuyu in the stores comes from Ca, but the Hana fuyu I grow it here in PA. However when fully ripe I find Hana Fuyu tastes as good as Hachiya. Bass...See More2010, The year of the bland persimmons
Comments (4)Did you have that 2010 West Coast "year without a summer" cold weather where you are (I am assuming Cali based on your zone info)? If so, I'm sure that's the reason. We had a record cold summer here in 2009. My peaches did the same thing your persimmons did this year -- they looked nice, and were juicy, but had ABSOLUTELY no flavor or sweetness -- it was kind of like biting into something soft and bland with the flavor of kleenex. After the first few, I just gave up even picking them, and let them just fall and cleaned up and disposed of afterwards. Now, this year, exact opposite, record warm spring, 2nd warmest to warmest summer on record in SE Michigan (varied by reporting station, it was warmest in Saginaw and Flint, but only 2nd for Detroit, and I'm in between Detroit and Flint). Fruit was SCRUMDILLICIOUS, everything was superb. I ESPECIALLY noticed it on my heat lovers, figs, American persimmons were/are both the best tasting EVER and ripened way, way earlier than normal. So, that's my guess as to what happened. I hope the weather gods are kinder to all of you in the West next year....See MoreFirst ripe persimmons of the year.
Comments (3)This is really early, the season is mostly in late September, October and November. At that time in some areas you may be able to find them at some farm markets or specialty produce stores. But there's really nothing akin to the pawpaw festivals, that revolve around the fruit, for persimmons. The few persimmon festivals are mostly carnivals that do usually have pudding and some other persimmon goods for sale. The most famous of these in Mitchell Indiana at one time was more involved with the fruit, and their contest for best fruit popularized the varieties Lena, Yates and Morris Burton....See MoreSeems to be a good year for my Persimmon...
Comments (7)Hi Ed: It was probably about 5 or 6 feet high. A bean pole tree from Southern States for about $40. I was able to fit it into my car. Hi Sam, I don't really know anything about the sex life of Fuyu. But many of these seem to have a few black, thin seeds (probably not viable) with an occasional plump seed. Fuyus are self-pollinating, so no need for another tree. But there are probably numerous persimmons in our region as there is a high Asian population who LOVE their persimmons like I do! So that maybe why I am seeing seeds. One can eat these fruit before they turn yellow, more crunchy then, like an unripe pear in texture, but I prefer them more ripe, then more like a cantelope....See Morepersianmd2orchard
