First ripe persimmons of the year.

Today I ate my first 3 American persimmons for this year. They were not as good as those that will come a little later, but not bad.

Had a few of the variety NC-10 the past few days, see a few others ripening. Overall expecting an earlier than usual season with smaller than usual fruit here with the lower than usual rainfall. Fruit count has been down too which should help with fruit size but reduce production further.

With persimmons coming on now, is there some where I can go and taste fresh persimmons? Sort of like a persimmons festival?

My earliest this year has been the variety Osage with fruits on some of the trees ripening and beginning to fall. (Hoping the stinkbugs will continue to stay away from this fruit as it loses its protective astringency, having seen some already on my ripening nonastringent kakis.) Season here is lagging a little behind last year's unusually early harvest.

Tony, I will be moving those 1st year Kaki and a few other 1st year plants, but I have close to a 150 other fruiting trees, not to mention other fruiting bushes and vines like blueberries etc... as well as a lot of plants in pots needing put in the ground, and I plan on keeping the other site anyway. It is not my residence, just a small cabin on a few acres. I have had pretty good luck tarping things to protect them, but it has mostly been with a group of potted plants grouped together on a short term few nights basis with a huge cover your roof type tarp. Just keeping the frost off can help on the short cold spell after I have moved all the potted figs and such out of winter storage. I have used incandescent bulbs as you speak on a smaller scale and I believe they help.

It had two fruit in its second year from the mail-order nursery (so not too big to begin with). I know I should have removed them to throw growth into wood, but who can bear the temptation to taste it soon? The plant is probably not more that 4-5 feet tall, with one fruit still left on for my son to taste when ripe. I forget whether there were a few seeds in it, but there are many other Asian and native persimmons near it. Some other Asian persimmons have seeds, so some male flowers seem to be around. I forget the details of Asian persimmon pollination.

Thanks Sey. It's my first year growing CP. Very impressed by its size, earliness, productivety, disease resistance, and taste. Its productivity is comparable to big beef. I grow 5 CP plants and have picked around 10 fruits/per CP plant since July: the smallest is one half pound and the largest one is in the picture. Notice that I put its taste last -- my "other" tomatoes all have great taste because I don't water and fertilize after the plants went into the holes. But CP has thin skin and soft meat and more watery than other types. I have been thinking, sey, that cutting back fertilizer and water may help you get early ripe fruits.

This is really early, the season is mostly in late September, October and November. At that time in some areas you may be able to find them at some farm markets or specialty produce stores. But there's really nothing akin to the pawpaw festivals, that revolve around the fruit, for persimmons. The few persimmon festivals are mostly carnivals that do usually have pudding and some other persimmon goods for sale. The most famous of these in Mitchell Indiana at one time was more involved with the fruit, and their contest for best fruit popularized the varieties Lena, Yates and Morris Burton.
