Lawn question 'sort of'

We just moved into to a new house east of Raleigh NC that is on a wooded lot. There is grass in large areas of the lot but also a lot of rough areas in the woods around the grass.

Problem is this lot has one of the finest fields of poison ivy I have ever seen.

Any suggestions on dealing with this so I do not have to worry about the grandchildren getting into it. I would like to get the poison ivy and leave the Virginia Creeper and other wild flower type plants, so would prefer not to use weapons of mass destruction.
