Weeds problem! Please help!

Hello,

I have looked through the FAQ page, and did not find what I am looking for.

I live in the greater Philadelphia area (Zone 6). I don't know what type of grass I have. I bought a bag of Scott Kentucky Bluegrass Mix seeds this spring, and only used a small portion of it. I am planning to use the rest this fall.

The lawn is an established one. Under full sun.

My husband mows the grass using the highest setting about every two weeks in summer.

Usually we only depend on rain. Last summer there was an extended period of dry weather, that was when the weed problem got much worse.

There are three major types of weeds growing wildly on my lawn:

1. Dandelions (I believe this is perennial)

2. Buckhorn plantain (I believe this is a broad leaf perennial. Also called ribwort plantain, English plantain, and narrowleaf plantain)

3. Crab grass (I believe this is annual)

These weeds are all over my lawn. Early this spring, I bought a weed hound to pull up 10% of the dandelions and plantains. It did not work and all the weeds came back. I did my best digging up all the roots.

Now I am looking for chemical ways to get rid of all these weeds.

I have used Bayer Adavance Season Long Weed Control for Lawns. It says it kills current weeds, but does not say what type of weeds it kills. Two month after we used that product, I can still see a lot of dandelions, plantains, and crab grass.

What weed killer should I use to kill all the weeds? When should I seed with the Kentucky Bluegrass Mix seeds?

I know next spring, I need to buy pre-emergent weed control. What brand and type should I buy? What time should I use the pre-emergent weed control?

Ortho Weed-b-gon max will kill all the weeds you mentioned. After today, should be good week to spray them. I would used a hose end sprayer and do the entire lawn. It will only take a few minutes.

You can reseed in a couple of weeks.

Relax guy, no problem Mon. You got new sod laid late in the season, you are going to have weeds so get use to it. Personally I would not worry about the Poa, but if it irritates you spray everything green with Round Up. Just make sure the Bermuda is dormant. In the meantime relax until the end of February. Last week of February or first week of March Apply a product called AMAZE. It is a long half life Pre-Emergence herbicide. Water it in and relax for a few of weeks. Once you are certain all chances of frost have past, get the lawn mower out and scalp the lawn down. I do not mean down to dirt, but enough to get all the dormant brown grass blades cut. Rake up all the debris and relax again for a few weeks until the weather warms up. Once you see some green sprigs of Bermuda growing after it starts to warm up, apply your first fertilizer application using a balanced fertilizer. Go to your local Home Depot and buy some Lesco 20-5-10 or 15-5-10 to do the job. Apply at the proper rate of 5 pounds per 1000/ft2 and water it in. From that point on find the BERMUDA BIBLE and follow the directions and RELAX.

Eradicating bermudagrass is a difficult and often ugly process. The best method, and also the ugliest, is spraying Roundup once every three weeks from the beginning of June thru the end of August. Then sod or seed the area.If your bermudagrass area is a small one then sometimes this can be tolerated. The next Roundup method would be to spray the bermuda in August three times, once every 10 days. This method also gets pretty ugly but if you resod the area it is over in a little over a month. Then you have the more expensive options like a Pylex, Turflon and Acclaim combo, or the Ornamec route that you mentioned. Pylex looks pretty promising but I could not recommend it yet.Turflon and Acclaim are very effective but you will see some injury/death to any kentucky bluegrass. I would not use the Ornamec it's a great product around ornamentals, but I would not use it on your lawn thinking that Ornamec is going to selectively take bermuda out of kbg/fescue lawn. The big gov spring goes through the loop of the link (which is on the carb side of the link) and the other end goes through either a small tab on the front facing bracket or the big hole on the throttle adjusting lever- depending how equipped. The little one in the throttle lever itself and to the bracket itself I believe.

Had the same problem. Weed b gon for the crabgrass and Buckhorn plantain and danelions, you can also get a weed hound to take out the dandelions! Easy. Or you can manually pull out the crabgrass now. Get rid of all the weeds now, then mow the lawn low and overseed this fall. Next spring get some pre-emergent to prevent crabgrass and use the weedhound to get rid of any dandelion that come up. You will be fine! i had the same problem 1 year ago and now im weed free (virtually0, anything that comes up now i use weed b gon or get my trusty weed hound out!

It took me almost a month to recover from back pain earlier this year. When my husband was at home looking after kids, I weeded with a newly bought weed hound in cold windy weather, and in the dim evening light. I worked hard for two weeks. I filled 64-gallon trash can with dandelines and Buckhorn plantain. Then a month later, they all came back.

I will try Weed-b-gon after hurricane Irene passes.

And how long can pre-emergent last? Is it better to spray pre-emergent in Feb just after all the snow melts, or spray in March when temp is in the 40s or 50s high.
