If you've got enough KBG in the lawn, it should spread to fill in the brown spots unless they're really big.

You could use a core aerator to expose more soil if the dethatcher does too much damage.

Jim, how large are the areas with the matted down grass/brown patch?

I just ran the chainmail drag over the dead areas (which was about 1/4th the backyard). Trying to get kill/get control of bermuda that was brought in with a topsoil load some years back. It's been an uphill battle the whole way. I've had better luck fighting poa, but the areas are looking pretty stripped right now.

The other small fescue brown-outs are scattered around from heat stress, but not that bad with more shade I've acquired this year. I've decided to aerate right through them and forget it.

auteck - they dropped my kbg by yesterday. They told me I was getting midnight II, but they sent midnight star instead. I doubt there is much difference in quality and tolerance, and I'm getting 50# instead of 5# in a pre-blend to plant, which I will do today. I also got a pretty good blend of tttf from Lesco that I can't wait to see how it all looks after I blend it.

Jim, if the brown areas are not too large, you can use your weed eater/trimer and cut them down to the dirt. Do a soil test with a long screwdriver to make sure you don't a stones or construction debris under those spots (it can cause shallow root system)

Another way of doing it is if you have a push mower (21" rotary type) you can lower the setting to the lowest available and mow those areas only down to 1/2" or so. Then you can aerate and drop some seed. A few bags of top soil from Lowe's ($1.39 per bag)or HD will make germination much faster and better.

I'm glad you've got Midnight Star rather than Midnight II, it is going to work better for your application. But you said you've received a 50-lb bag rather than a 5-lb? That's a lot of seed if is a 50-lb bag...

One of the best ways to kill bermuda is to spray round up at the higher rate, then dug out the dead/infested area. You can also till the area after applying roundup a couple of times destroying the root system in the process. If it comes back next summer, it will be sporadic, and then you can spot spray round up or Turflon to supress it and keep a mowing height of 3 inches so the TTTF/KBG will shade the upcoming bermuda.

You know, that might be a good idea to get some more top soil and scatter it around lightly where I burned out the bermuda. I've already leveled a few low spots with 3 bags of top soil (man, that stuff does NOT go far at all).

Yep, I got 50# alright, but he gave me a pretty good price. Anyway, how much would you recommend to blend with my TTTF? There's generally only around 5# per 50# of kbg per bag with a tttf and kbg pre-mix, so if I want to get a good stand I was thinking to increase that to maybe 10-15# per 50#. What do you think?? I'll probably do it tomorrow morning if I can get some rain today to soften up the ground so I can aerate.

That bermuda is really a tough customer. I've been working on it for the last 2-3 weeks with glyphosate concentrate, ande now I spotted a few stringers last night in the dam fron yard. Man, I'm pissed. I don't want to pass up the opportunity to get this stuff in the ground with some good rain coming (they say), so I'll just have to work on the bermuda from now on in patches, I guess.
