Lawn Boy Mower

I have a Lawn Boy walk behind self propelled mower that was making a knocking sound and using a LOT of oil...almost a quart while mowing my lawn (about 2hours)..New rings?. I took the head off and while turning the flywheel back and forward it produced the knocking sound. I could hold the piston down while moving the flywheel in one direction and when I reversed the direction there was about a 1/16 inch loose movement in the piston.

The mower was bought in 2006 with not all that much mowing time. I had to have a new transmission put in under warranty. It sure seems like I may have got a lemon.

The model number shown on the plate is Lv195EA with another number 10682. DOM 06157LJ0029. I have no idea what DOM is.

My question would it be worth having this engine repaired (I think I can do the work myself since I do some mechanical work) or maybe a new engine or maybe a new lawn mower?

Tilt the mower up on its RH side wheels (carb on the high side). Take out the brass bowl nut - bowl will probably stay on, and no fuel will come out. Get a wire tie off a loaf of bread and strip the paper off. Look for a small bleed hole near the end of the bolt and rod it out with the soft steel wire. Check the other larger holes and shoot some carb spray through all holes. Reinstall orifice bolt, set the mower down, do the normal prime and it should run for you. If you use Sta-Bil in your gas along with a couple oz of Marvel Mystery Oil, you won't be doing this every 60 days. Almost forgot; for the future, mention that you have a Tecumseh LEV195 engine on that LB.

The engine is set up to come up off the deck without taking any controls or anything off. The problem is, the pulley is between the engine and the muffler plate. Remove the blade, mulch fan and blade driver. Remove the belt cover. You should now be able to see the pulley on the crankshaft. You have to raise the engine up out of the muffler plate so you can get the new belt over the end of the crank. I think this requires taking off the muffler cover and removing the muffler plate bolts, then the engine-to-deck bolts. Have somebody there to hold the engine up while you slip the belt on. Then you can put it on the trans pulley. You're going to get dirty, but should have no problems doing it. Mind the exhaust gasket and make sure it's positioned right before bolting on the muffler plate. This is an excellent opportunity to check the exhaust ports and lower crank seal as well as cleaning out the muffler. Maybe it's simpler than this but that's what I think you have to do.

I went to Home Depot and looked at a new Lawn Boy to see what I think you were writing about. At Home Depot it looks like a metal cap with sides inside the bottom of the spark plug black rubber boot. I also looked in my boot with a magnifying glass and it looks like only a round flat piece of metal in the boot with no sides. So does this require a new boot or can this still be fixed somehow by a novice like me? Would a hose clamp on the outside of the boot work or would this be dangerous? The last time I mowed, I attached a big black metal binder clip from my local Staples store over the boot which worked and held on the boot but think a hose clamp would hold better. Any idea how much money this repair would be at a shop? Again, thanks for any help. Al

Thanks bogman for the info, I am going to use 1953. I was 12 then and my last year of Little League. Remember my Dad saying that this was the first rotary mower. I just now have to decide what asking price when I sell it. I guess I can claim to being the oldest guy on here unless saxman1 lets us know how old he is. Thanks a lot for everybodies help.

My goal was certainly not to offend you. I had assumed it was in the tool forum also or something. DOM for Tecumseh shows a julian Date Of Manufacture. 2006, 157th day. As to answer your question, if there are no external leaks and no signs of the breather pumping oil into the hose above the carb- it is best to throw in the towel on this engine. The nature of basic aluminum block engine gone bad + if you haven't heard - Tecumseh is no longer. Lawnboy had a different crank, but a little searching on the web, Google it, EBAY etc may find a cheap replacement. Briggs replacements can be had as well for Lawnboy.

landon: Just a little humour apparently at your expense ! Not to be Taken Personally. To directly answer your question your mower was prone to early crankshaft failures.
By your description , either bottom end bearing failure top wrist pin wear or both . It is not worth repairing (unless you have a doaner engine), as advised by Tom a replacement engine if your chassis is in good shape , would be the most prudent path to follow .

I have since opened up the crankcase. The rod is loose (worn) on the crank. Also the exhaust valve is loose in the block. just wobbles around. Worn out I guess. So I am junking it for a new mower. Just not worth messing with.
As for the humor it just struck me wrong when I was asking a legitimate question. Thanks for the comeback.

Burned almost a quart of oil in 2 hours of use?? Wow!! The sump only holds .66 quart so you had to refill once? You must have darkened the sky with plumes of smoke to burn that much oil in 2 hours.

From your description the engine is shot. Was it run dry or the oil never changed? Or always that way.
