Bermuda Not 'Greening Up'
Comments (6)Waiting game. There are a limited number of things you can do to bermuda to bump it in the spring. What you are doing is much improved. Thanks for doing your homework! Bermuda Bible will finish your quest for information. DO NOT WORRY about your neighbors. You are doing it right and will have much MUCH less hassle than they will over the course of a year. The Bermuda Bible will tell you to use chemical fertilizers for optimum results. If you decide to do that I would urge you to continue with organic fertilizers all along the way. The chemical ferts strip away the organic microbes in the soil simply by not feeding them. Organic fertilizer will feed them and keep them working for you. I think the dual approach to bermuda is better than either one or the other. If you realize your lawn surface needs to be leveled for better mower results, we can help you with that, too. There is more discussion about leveling on the regular lawn forum....See MoreGreen beans, any other way to preserve than freeze or can?
Comments (12)Blanching destroys the enzymes that make the beans mushy. I blanch for 3 minutes, then plunge in ice water, dry on paper towels, freeze on a jelly roll pan then seal in Foodsaver bag. That reminds me I have to bag the ones I blanched and froze this morning. There is a discussion on Harvest about this from early this year. I have pickled some bigger beans, ran out of vinegar solution had to mix more up so stuck 2 pints in the fridge. We took some to a BBQ only a few days later and they tasted really good. Lemon Spiced Pickled Beans from Small Batch Preserving by Ellie Topp. We don't like canned beans either but these were good (of course they hadn't been processed, I'll let you know how the processed ones are in a few months). I figured they'd be good in 3-bean salad once my limas come in (or with storebought canned chickpeas). Here is a link that might be useful: Freezing beans on Harvest...See MoreAny way to make a gray paint look less-blue?
Comments (15)Thanks all! I did go back to the store and have them mess with the color a bit. I think I'm going to like the new color better (I did a quick test splotch) but I don't think I'm going to have enough for a full second coat. I'm actually using this in 2 different rooms so I'll probably use what I have left in one room and figure something out for the other. Sorry it took me so long to respond -- gardenweb was giving me guff when I tried to log in....See MoreWhy is my bermuda not growing horizontally and green yet?
Comments (33)So I fertilized with Vigoro Super Green and my grass has greened up nicely. Watering to 1 inch and depth of 6 inches. I check with builder again and I have common Bermuda. I guess they went the cheap route and found cheap ass common Bermuda sod. I mowed my backyard at 2 inches and the reel mower always gets snagged at the brown spots you see in the pic..feels like I scalp it. I know I spreader fertilizer evenly because I did 2 passes at opposite directions. I yanked out a grass stem from a brown spots and a green spot to compare. They both look even in height (so is that technically not a scalp in the brown areas?) however the left one obviously has a lot more green leaf. 1st pic - front lawn 2 inches. Notice that the grass isn't dense. You seem some bare spots. 2nd pic - front lawn 1.5 inches. Cleaner and more level however shows more brown stem. 3rd pic - back lawn. Notice the brown spots. That's always a rough spot for my mower and it feels like I scalp...but look at the 4th pic. 4th pic - comparison of grass from green and brown area in back lawn. Same height yet in obviously has much more brown stem than the other. I compared a few more strands of grass and they are about the same height in both areas. I can keep fertilizing monthly and watering deeply so maybe the front lawn will grow denser with time. What's up with my backyard tho? Brown areas vs green areas. Those spots are always brown. Not much green leaf in those areas usually....See Morenorthtexas
