I need reassurance my Bermuda will recover

I need reassurance my Bermuda will recover from a good scalping. About a week ago I took my Tifway 419 lawn down from 1" to 1/2". That was a lot work due the excessive clippings and multiple passes to get it low and even....

I am looking forward to lower height, however, and already like the way it looks, even though it is brown. The lawn was aerated and fertilized 4 days ago (from time of pictures).

How long before it should turn fully green, like a fairway at Augusta, (I wish). I plan to cut at least twice a week (or more) with my reel mower at 1/2"

I don't know how much fert was put down, but they added "premo" or something??? to encourage lateral growth. That was mostly for winter dead spot which as already filled in. I had to wait until late June, early July for that to fill in.. sad..

I'm in cool season grass country, so I don't have direct experience, but everything I've read about Bermuda leads me to believe that Bermuda is a very persistent grass and it takes a lot to kill it, so you should have a full green lawn soon.

I'm also a cool season grass guy, but I have read that trying to reduce the height of bermuda this time of year is not optimal. That said, I agree with bpgreen: unless you are in an area where bermuda struggles, or you just sodded recently, don't worry - you haven't seen the last of that bermuda. Just irrigate it appropriately for now and let the root system and the fertilizer do their work.

Thanks for the response. I read it a few days ago and have been meaning to respond. After I tilled it, I did see the recommendations on here not to till soil. I really don't know if it mattered in my case because I had pretty much tilled it just due to the fact that I dug it all up when trying to find the water issue. When it dried, it was literally hard as a rock and I don't know if any grass would have been able to break through without it being tilled. Oh well. If seeding my bermuda is out of the picture, what should I do? Will the bermuda eventually fill in that large void? Also, do I need to do anything to soften the soil? It's softer now that it's been tilled but it got kind of hard again when it dried out. Last question is the strips in the back where I laid the sod are really starting to come in some. Since putting the strips down, I have fertilized with milorganite (slow release) and Lesco 46-0-0 (fast release) and it seems to have given the grass a bit of a boost. I am afraid it may be unlevel though. I just saw an outstanding write up from somebody that leveled his whole front yard with sand. Should I level these spots as it fills in? Is sand the best thing to use or some sort of topsoil? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance for any help you all can provide.

Christy, It is hard to say how often you should be watering. It will depend on your tree size, container size, and growing medium. Typically, if your leaves wilt it is caused by a combination of heat/lack of water. If after the heat of the day has passed, the leaves are still wilted, give them water. High winds will cause water evaporation. ~james

Multiple coats past two is determined by the actual color of red chosen and the base it's mixed in. If you choose wisely and prepare properly, you can have red walls in two coats - three max. BenM's Caliente in Aura paint is one of my favorite examples. That's what I selected for my own bedroom - two coats, no primer. And I've had multiple clients use it as well. One client started at 8:00 am. Emptied her 13' x 18' dining room, prepped, rolled on two coats of Caliente and hosted a sit-down dinner that same evening.

You need a sanding block. Or you’ll sand in waves. And you need to hit it with a prime coat to judge how smooth it may be it in reality. It takes multiple coats of both if you’re trying to fill grain. You just doubled your work to try to do that. And it’s a lot of work to begin with. Most people are willing to deal with the telegraphing grain. Because if they aren’t, buying new doors is by far the better option to reduce the pain. .

It'll be green before ya know it.... Optimally, if you want to maintain @ 1/2", I'd say you could've scalped to 3/8"or 7/16", but even still, you should be okay. Or, you could begin to maintain at 5/8" for the rest of the season... Either way, I think you'll be surprised at how fast it recovers & gets to looking really good.

Oh, I'm a bermuda guy too.... here's a pic of mine from earlier this year...
this is shortly after greenup & maintained at .500" (1/2")

Bermuda is very hard to kill so no worries. All you have to do is water deeply when needed and fertilize with LESCO 39-0-0 every 30-45 days. It should fill in within the month.

I'd be surprised if it took more than a few days to a week or so... won't take a month...

It will survive, but you waited way too late in the season to do this. Optium time is right at the beginning of the growing season.

Since it is hot now you are going to have to water more because now th eground is exposed and evaporation rates will be very high.

Lastly mow 3 times a week with this height, and be patient.

As OKC suggested (your grass looks great), I will plan to cut at 5/8" for the rest of the season. I look forward to starting next season off at 3/8" and maintaining 1/2".

I still have high hopes for remainder of this season. This is my 3rd season, and my grass has not meet my expectations, overall (which are high). Maybe the lower cut height is the answer.

Any reason why I can't leave at arourd 5/8" over the winter?
