Lawn-Boy 10324 out of control

Good day to all. I have a Lawn-Boy 10324 that I had bought new, lost in a divorce, was sold to a former neighbor who monkeyed with it, gave up on it and through it in the alley, and is now back in my possession. I was able to get it started but the goofball neighbor had done something to the carb and that thing runs at about 10,000 rpm, like it's drinking jet fuel. I have disassembled the carb and replaced the governor spring (which really seems useless). I have found that the governor vane does not move freely. Should my next step be to get a new vane and throttle disc to go with my new spring? What about setting that to a default factory speed setting? If i can't figure this out it will go out on the curb like I found it and I really don't want to do that. Your help is appreciated.

Well the governor van has to move freely. I can't tell you from here why it doesn't, that is something you will have to determine for your self. It is much too valuable a mower to throw out even if you had to try to locate a different carb. I assume you know where both ends of the governor spring attaches but the van must move freely for it to make any difference anyway.

Thanks for the reply Walt. I think I will run and get a new vane and disc and see if that does the trick. The online service manual talks about a baseline setting for that collar on the vane. Hopefully it will make sense once that vane moves freely. The 10324 clearly a very different beast from my older 10400 which I got to start on the first pull after sitting for 7 years with fuel in it. If all goes well, that 10324 will be for sale.

Thanks, saxman...my first question was going to be what's the closest match to Lawn-Boy green. The guy I bought it from had another LB, this one was a Supreme from the OMC days...maybe from the early '80's. It had electric start and an aluminum deck. Might have snagged that one as well, but one project at a time is all I have room for!

I have had dozens of these with this problem. I don't know why so many complain about the carbureators being plastic, etc. but they are so simple to work on. Just clean the carb and I usually remove the pilot jet and clean the orifices with a thin wire as well as the main jet orifice. I highly recommend installing a good gas filter like the larger Briggs clear style you can get anywhere. I have made them standard fare on my Lawn Boys for years. I don't like those "York Peppermint Patties" filters though. While you're in the carb you may want to do the minor mod on the jets (very very simple) to make her run better and less prone to clogging in the future. Walt is correct, if the dealer gave you that line, he really doesn't understand 2 cycle engines. They are incredibly simple once understood. But that can probably be said about anything in life. BTW, the elcheapo throttle control plastic detent typically breaks and I wouldn't worry about it. It is really for the idiots who can't figure out what a choke setting is. The better alum. deck models got a better throttle control, much smoother.

I'll stand by my previous post. Having worked with 2 strokes for quite some time now and small engines in general, two stroke small engines make their power at full throttle or close to it. Its detrimental to a small 2 stroke engine to run it at half throttle for extended periods of time, and burns off more carbon, makes more power, and is most efficient at wot or close to it. Think of it this way, You can lug a 4 stroke more because it has a wider power band starting at a lower rpm range up to full throttle. 2 strokes dont lug well at all, and make their torque at high rpm, aka full throttle. More torque, more cutting power. Lawnboys are governed as to not run as fast as string trimmers or chainsaws but still achieve optimum cutting efficiency when running at peak. I'm basing my post on experience in working with and rebuilding/tuning 2 stroke jetskis, lawn mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, etc. All engines have sweet spots, 2 strokes are made to rev and run at higher rpms constantly due to their much smaller power band.

IF you are tinkering with mowers, you need a tachometer, at least a cheap vibratac.

Ok, I replaced the vane and when the carb is not attached to the mower, the vane moves very freely. I put the carb in place and get everything lined up right and start the screws with my hand. I check the vane and verify that it still moves freely. Affirmative. I tighten down the mounting screws. Vane is bound up. HUH? I loosen the screws a turn or so, thinking I over-tightened them, until the vane moves freely again. Now it won't start. I notice that the air filter box sits slightly askew.

I am starting to dislike this mower. Good thing I still have my old 10400...

I took my Lawn-boy 10324 for repair. It starts now but only runs wide open with the choke on. The throttle control does nothing. It looks to me like there is a part missing that would connect the arm on the back of the breather box to the collar adjust air vein. Am I right?

Sounds like you need to take it back to where you had it "repaired".
