Thank You! Thank You! It's about time that someone did something about lawn chemicals, and pets.

The real threat to pets has gone on, and on, for far too long. Something needs to be done about this!

There has been so much Crapola. (Crapola is, of course, the huge serving of Crap, so much so, that the pile has that little Dairy Queen curlicue on top). In fact, the main threat to pets has gone un-challenged. This is not fair. The truth needs to be told.

The total number of pets killed by "lawn chemicals"? Maybe one, maybe two, each year, for the last twenty years (if your cable channel has 'whole world coverage', so not even one event could possibly be missed). But the real killers? Kids. Damn. Those kids have to be banned. Kids kill pets, 43 times the amount that lawn chemicals kill pets, each year. Forty three times more. It's just not to be tolerated. Turtles, flushed down drains. Dogs, tied to hubcaps. Cats, dropped from second-story windows. And corn silos. Don't forget the corn silos. Nor the BB guns. It's those kids, and those BB guns, that are a real problem. Not to mention the parents. Personally, after you ban kids, you should really consider banning parenthood.

But lawn chemicals? Hey, that's gotta be 1108th down on the list. I mean, hey, be serious, just for once, eh?

I try to stay organic and don't think chems are the best option for me. But I can honestly say that in those two "episodes" there is no useful content at all. Try to do better in the next episode.

Chemicals are bad and cats and dogs don't know how to read the labels or the yellow warning signs the lawn care companies put out.

The connection between lawn chemicals and cancer in pets is not new.

There was a scientific study that showed that Scottish Terriers exposed to treated lawns were four to seven times more likely to contract bladder cancer than Terriers who were not exposed.

And as bpgreen noted pets can't read.

But I'd also like to point out that pets are smaller so their bodies aren't able to dilute their exposure to chemicals as much as larger creatures, like us.

And dogs must use the lawn as their bathroom, they are continually exposed to the lawn as a matter of necessity, they are closer to the ground and sniffing all the time, so their proximity and length of exposure to the lawn is considerably more than ours.

You are really giving the two films too much credit, watch them and see what you think. The post is pure propoganda and should be removed. It has no creditbility or substance.

Don't get me wrong, I use nothing except CGM on my home lawn. But the short films depict anything you buy from a box store will harm your pets.

okay, so I went back and took the time to watch the videos. They were cute and funny. The animals talking made me laugh. The cat said she thought the lawn care truck was spraying to mark its territory... hee, hee...

I tend to agree with the point in the second video about reading the label and following directions... I can't see how anyone can disagree with that.

However I think, and the video subtly hints at this... That if people read the label, and they have pets (or children), perhaps they won't use the products.

There are proven ways to maintain a lawn that is healthier for pets than using chemicals.

I got the impression that future videos on that page may focus on "organic" lawn care.

How many posts on these forums have no credibility or substance? I don't think the link needs to be deleted. Its amusing with an obvious bias... so what?

Joe--I didn't mean to imply that I don't think chemicals can harm pets. If you had watched the videos, I think my flippancy would have been a little more understandable.

I only watched one film, but it was laughable, annoying and insulting. We know the dogs and cats can't read because we eavesdrop on their phone calls to Dr Do Better and they explain their illiteracy to the veterinarian.

So they can't read, but they can use the phone and they can talk. I'm not sure how they got the phone number if they can't read.

I often wonder what my pets would say if they could talk, perhaps that is why I found the video amusing rather annoying...

I think that if my dog could talk, the first thing he'd say is "Stop locking me up when all the b****** are in heat, MAN!!!"

Maybe your cat doesn't, but I think mine surfs the Web when I'm not home. This would explain the mysterious charges to HotTabbies.com on my credit cards and personalized notes sent from somebody named LonelyCalico.

Still, the movie boils down to "chemicals, bad" without really good supporting evidence.

Not that chemicals aren't bad. I restrict their usage and avoid them whenever necessary, following the least-toxic methodology. I prefer not to expose any of us (including three dogs) to them.

Your pets can't read but you can. This isn't just about pets. People let their young children go out and roll and play in the grass. I have neighbors that let their kids play in the cul de sac which is fine and the kids go and roll down my hill in the front yard which I don't necessarily have a major problem with but people don't think twice about what kind of chemicals can be in my lawn. These kids are out playing barefoot sometimes. The dogs lick their feet sometimes too.
Isn't it common sense?

The other day I told me neighbors that I had just applied chemicals to the lawn while their kids were rolling down my hill.

I don't think chemical fertilizers are that harmful but I'd think pesticides and herbicides would harm dogs and kids rolling around in the lawn, putting paws or hands in mouth, etc. They don't know any better...

Our family dog had a tumor the size of softball lodged between esophagus and spine and had to be put to sleep. I can't help but wonder if the stuff that we used in the lawn to get rid of ants and weeds had contributed to that. Who knows...
