Let em eat em
Comments (9)i have the space, so i planted a food plot for the vermin (deer and rabbits) to aid in keeping them out of my real stuff. i also have a large stand of some kind of wild dogwood that they really go for. so until the snow got too deep they were really going for the rape and turnips i planted, and i know this will be unpopular, but they dont niblle on a 22 for long. it got to the point last year that you could look out any window almost any time of day and see between 5 to 10 rabbits,,i am all for sharing, but they even tore into my cactus bed last winter and it took me tons of copper to eliminate the fungi infections there damage created, and almost all summer for most of the species to get back to where they were. try going to a hunting store and buy some fox or coyote urine and spray it on your prized things every week or so through the hardest part of winter...See MoreRose slugs...fight em, or leave em?
Comments (30)Re: curled rose slugs. Well they certainly uncurled fast when I threw them into the soap suds and water and sank to the bottom of the measuring cup. Eventually they went bye bye due to it so just poured the water out with them in it on the other side of the fence. My Shield rose had one curled up inside the blossom but I pulled it out of there. I think there must have been more eating it but no more as in that section of the garden out the back there are robins and catbirds and chickadees all feasting on them. Wish I could make a sign pointing to the ones out the front saying this way for more goodies. Pulled off 3 more today and 10 the other day. Same plant I think I am getting the upper hand. I also sprayed it with the safer spray Sat. night that one will not harm the bees only the bad bugs. Also won't harm the flowers either....See MoreSedum'll Eat 'em
Comments (9)Thanks for looking and the kind words. Outside pix from zone 5 on a C&S forum are rare (and understandably so) so I figured any excuse is a good one. Ryan- Shel was a favorite of mine. I may have a Dr Hook album floating around somewhere. Josh- You know me, I've more conifers than anything. In fact, there used to be a sedum 'Blue Spruce' in there until my own mutant 'Dragon's Blood' devoured it. "Now you sedum..." LOL Conifers hold their own during the growing season... ...but in zone 5, their winter interest really is a must. tj...See MoreCan't beat getting a springtime hummer!
Comments (15)I love hummingbirds but if they were any bigger (say the size of chickens) they'd be dangerous LOL! I've two who decided to nest on my deck in one of the birdhouses I place on the railings and they dive bomb me when I go out on the deck to sit. My hair is fairly long and the little male got tangled up in my hair the other day. Frightened the wits out of both of us! i take my morning cofee in the kitchen now since they seem to object to me on the deck so early. Kinda wierd but I'm being tolerant since I put the birdhouses up in the first place. If i didn't want birds nesting on my deck i should have put the houses elsewhere! Jenna...See Moreolpea
