Moving- dig em' up as 'eyes' or wait?
Comments (26)The old house isn't under contract yet... that's why I'm being hasty about getting them out asap. I don't want any misconceptions. I dug up approx. 30 or so yesterday afternoon. Fortunatly a pretty good amount of labels were still in the ground so I brushed around them until I found the eyes poking out and snatched them up. Everything was going fine at the begining because I started with the most recent gardens but quickly ran out of big enough pots on the older Hostas. Silly me... I forgot Hostas grow out not down, doh! Some of them really took off since I planted them last spring! I also noticed the ones I received from swaps were more rooted out then the purchased plants planted around the same time. (Note to self: participate in more swaps here!) So far so good but I'm not taking all of them. I'll leave the doubles and some of the Tiara's behind, often when I order they throw in the Tiara's as gifts anyways....See MoreCome and get em aka the big dig
Comments (17)Hi Abi, Thank you again so much for letting me dig up your yard! Michelle's 7 year old daughter, named Abbey, loved the pussy willows and was so happy I brought them! I'll never hear the end of the Frog's Toes (aka Toad Lilies) they were one of the last things I took out of my car and Michelle wanted to know if there were any more of those (I said no). She loved the goosenecks too, I wish I could have taken more. The Sea Oats, Asters, Sedums, Christmas Ferns should all sell well. The whole family really liked the Milk Weed (?) and when Abbey started to go for the pods on the plants, Michelle told her to be careful that they needed the seeds - thanks for suggesting that I take more pods in a plastic bag! Michelle may be able to figure out what the mystery plant is or if not someone from MassHort can identify it but of course she thought one was really cool too. Michelle is already trying to figure out when we can come back again and bring the big muscle! Of course she or I will contact you by email before hand. I'm sure I'm forgetting some plants but thank you so much - your contribution of your plants is going to raise money for the Childrens' Hospital of Boston and I hope that makes your move a tiny, tiny bit easier. I mentioned the pool and that some cats may be able to go to a good home. Thank you again so much! Marlene...See Moreants, ants and more ants - kill 'em or leave 'em
Comments (6)Hi Marnie, What can I say like well Ants are everywhere, and while they are there at least you know you dont have termites, but they are a jolly nuisance all the same. And yes I know what it is like to see them come into your house by the thousands go up the wall and walk all around your cornices to come down again and go out through the front of your house somewhere, beats me why they didn't walk over the garden to the front, or under the house, it would have been a lot quicker. Now we are talking brand new house here 5 years ago, hubby and I built it ourselves and while we were building it I said to hubby look at all those ants coming up the bearers, then when we put the joists in same thing, by time we put the frame up the wall studs were alive with the blighters so you can imagine our surprise one day when we go to the block to start work to find none there at all, why because it rained. And I have noticed over the past few years since we have lived here, when it is real dry they come in looking for water, I used to find them in the bath, sinks and even in the toilet cisten, then when it rained really heavy the same thing happened. This year we have had none so far, in the dry or wet but that could be because I have put down those Bait Stations where they go in and take some of it back to the nest and feed Her Majesty and she dies. About two months ago I layed the Bait Stations again when I seen them come in and I seen them go but they have not returned.I cant believe it as there are thousands in the Garden and if you can put up with them out there, let them be after all its their back yard too. But in the house well thats a different matter and I think its best they are not there.....Cheers..MM....See MoreWeek 46: Up and At 'em!
Comments (45)Really?! How awful. No, not in my area that I know of. Once, where I managed a restaurant, there was a mystery spitter. HAwking spitter. In the elevator on the ceiling. On the chandeliers in the main dining room. Had to be a cleaning person, given the fact if anyone saw them during business hours, they'd probably have beaten the crap outta 'em. Never did figure that one out. I'd love to trade seeds. Leave the flowers on the plants, put some kind of paper or something under the plant. Then let winter happen. In the spring the seeds will have had their cold snap and be ready to germinate. The seeds are very hard to see once they've dropped. I have purple, so I'll just let 'em spread. :) I forgot to say I also have fox poop. Chicken poop from the neighbors. And cat poop. Did I mention a full supply of cat poop? And 5 cats who think my raised beds are litter boxes? Convenient, though. Fertilizer and I don't have to scoop. Enough about poop. It's freaking martyphilpot out....See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
