Bermuda seedlings

Live in AZ and the Bermuda is on the move with new growth producing seedlings. If I should remove the 'flower' portion and plant it instead of purchasing seeds, will the seedlings grow and produce new Bermuda grass in barren areas?

I'm not sure if bermuda seed heads are sterile or not. But I do know that bermuda will spread 10x faster simply scooting over and under the ground than it will if you rely on the seeds scattering.

If you have seed heads you are not mowing low enough and not frequently enough. You should be mowing at your mower's lowest setting or one notch higher. And you should be mowing every 3-2 days when the grass is growing fast and every 4-3 days the rest of the growing season. Letting the seed heads form is the ugly part of having bermuda. If bermuda never got those seed heads a lot more people would be growing it. It is not a lazy person's turf.

Find the Bermuda Bible online and memorize it.

You got me. I do have the mower set high, but do so because of a bad experience last early summer. Went from highest setting to 2 notches lower after 3 days of high setting mowing and the entire lawn went yellow. Regardless of how much or little water I gave it, it stayed yellow for the rest of the summer.

Now when you say "simply scooting over and under the ground" exactly what do you mean? I will read the bible, but for now I'm in prime runner time of the year in AZ and would like to follow your recommendation. Amount of water?

"Just be patient for now. You will be rewarded for you effort. Just be sure to feed, water, and mow it properly." I only wanted to get the 1st mow done because of how much taller the weeds were. I wanted to mow it down so it doesnÂt start to look like a jungle ha-ha...I will be patient, as far as feed and water...It has been 23 days since i spread starter fertilizer when I spread the seed, I also water twice a day. 1. Should i continue to water twice daily? 2. When and what type of fertilizer should be added? A side note: Like i said i have been watering twice daily for the last 4 days but prior to that 3 times a day, i noticed yesterday that i had a lot of places where the ground has cracks! Is that because there isnÂt grass in place? I know it has been 99 for ever and my backyard is full sun from dawn until dusk. Should i water 3 times instead? When i water, I have 4 stations and run them about 30-45 minutes each at 6pm but only about 15-20 minutes each at 6am. Should I change anything I am doing? Thanks again for your tips and advice!

1) I assume you're just going to round up the weeds? If so, you can seed the next day. 2) Lime whenever you want. It takes months to fully work its way into the soil, so it doesn't really matter. If the tests call for more than 40 lbs per 1000 sq ft though, you'll want to break it up into multiple applications. 3) When seeding, you should use a starter fertilizer or an equivalently balance fertilizer. Any box store will carry this. It is definitely important to fertilize properly to get the grass off to a good start. Bermuda is a nitrogen hog, so make sure to fertilizer every month or so. 4) Bermuda seed is small, so you don't want to bury it too deeply. You can use peatmoss if you want, but just sprinkle a very thin layer. Many people just sprinkle some straw on top to keep some of the moisture in. Also, it is generally a good idea to break up the soil with a hard raking before you seed. Sports fields can get quite compacted. This is especially important if the bare soil is currently crusted over.

I don't believe I said "Nitrogen is unsafe for children". One of the big reasons I got rid of my bermuda was because I didn't want to put down fertilizer every month in the summer to keep it green. Why pray tell am I uncomfortable with doing that? I'll tell you why. There's health warnings printed right there on the bag. You can decide if you want to keep you children and pets off the area where the fertilizer was applied but I wouldn't want that stuff to be ingested. Not to mention the effects all this fertilizer has on the local water shed. I would have said the same thing about a Scotts low nitrogen turf builder if such a thing exists but the nitrogen part had nothing to do with the comment about safety. It was two unrelated facts in one sentence. I mentioned high nitrogen because that's what the bermuda sod that I had required to stay green during the short growing season we have here. And It required monthly apps of fertilizer to perform decent. If you want to make the case that 6 months or less a year of green grass is acceptable then there are other types of warm season grass that require little to no fertilizer. At least you wouldn't be going through so much fertilizer for such a short period of glory which was the ultimate reason I decided to switch away from bermuda. So much work, so little time to enjoy it here.

Rhizo and bamatufa Been doing more internet surfing. Seems that planting the annual rye in September will make a good temporary lawn to keep down erosion , mud etc, In the spring I can then over seed the rye with the Bermuda and the rye will help to protect the young Bermuda seedlings then dye off as the weather warms up. As bamatufa says here in the gulf coast region the early warm temperatures will kill off the rye early. Some even advocate planting a mixture of rye and unhulled Bermuda at the same time but not sure I want the Bermuda seed to lay around that long as I think the only thing that would do is feed the birds. As a transplanted Midwesterner I have to get used to the lack of a killing frost in early October. One thing I do not miss about Indiana weather LOL Thanks for your inputs

Bermuda spreads along the ground thru stolons and rhizomes. That is why it's so dang hard to kill or keep out of beds. It will grow across my sidewalk if I didn't edge it. But it's also one of the greatest attributes of this grass! What can I say, I love the stuff.

Not if it is hybrid Bermuda as all hybrid Bermuda seed is sterile.

Thanks for all the followups. Good info. But how do I go from a max height setting on my mower to, let's say 1 inch, without torching out the existing grass for the rest of the summer (like last year)?
