When to apply grub control

I am planning on applying Bayer Advanced 24 Hour Grub Killer Plus with Dylox (I've seen quite a few grubs when digging in the yard). I believe I've read to apply it in June. With the late spring, excessive rain and cool weather (we've only had a couple of days above 80 and it's been on the 60s and 70s for the last ten days) do I delay applying it until even later? I've also read that Grub-Ex is better but that since it contains Chlorantraniliprole, it needs to be applied early in Spring, correct? Thanks in advance!

Thanks! After looking further, I actually want to apply Imidacloprid not Dylox (in late June). While digging in various locations in the yard this spring I have noticed quite a few grubs. It may not be 10 grubs per square foot, but in some locations it might be close. Since I have not applied any grub control in the past few years, I figure I should do so this year. What rate should I be applying .20% Imidacloprid (I read in that article that some manufacturers do not actually list the correct rate needed to prevent)?

So here is an update. I did buy beneficial nematodes. First batch was the Steinerneima Feltiae from Amazon (Scanmask is the company). Weeks later I see no difference. I even set up a rubbermaid 18 gallon bin filled with 4-5 inches of compost that was moist and used the remainder of the beneficial nematodes mixed in the compost well and then I introduced several grubs and mealworms expecting them to be dead in 48 hours or so. Weeks later the worms are still alive and so are the grubs, so I am guessing the beneficial nematodes weren't even alive. Before I saw the lack of results from the first batch, I bought 2 other varieties from buglogical.com (Heterohabditis and the Steinernema Carpocapsae). With the 3 different strains of Beneficial Nematodes I was expecting joy but several weeks later I still see no difference. With these 3 varieties I should not still see ant mounds or slugs or the grubs. By the way I ordered 50 million of the last 2 varieties in which they claim 50 million would cover a half acre. The area I treated was less than 1/10 of an acre, heck probably 200 square feet. Using 2 of the 50 million batches is would effectively cover a whole acre and I still don't see results in a small 200 sq foot area which tells me these things weren't alive. I also started 2 other containers with compost and added 2 different strains in each container and added mealworms and grubs and they werent dead within 2 or 3 days and are still alive today over 2 weeks later, again telling me the beneficial nematodes were not alive. So to make a long story short $200 spent and no results. Very disappointed.

I just put some down today around my shed and old compost and old mulch piles (loaded with big fat crubs! and apparently that was what was attracting a skunk - he's NOT under my deck, but that's another story....) Anyway the bag said you could put it down from May through July. Rake it in then water it... Just read the back of the bag - good instructions and info.

Most beneficial nematode packages contain more than one species. As a matter of fact, both species you mention are extremely similar and are likely to be packaged together along with a few others. Be sure to read and understand with certainty what you are purchasing and that it is intended for grubs. The directions should clearly tell you how many to use in a given amount of space. The label will also tell you that the soil must be warmish (68F is ideal) before you apply these nematodes and that sunlight can kill them. Your soil should be moist in advance, and free from mulch or other debris. You want to apply the nemas directly to the soil surface. Be sure to order your nematodes,fresh, from a reputable source, one that provides plenty of educational information on how to store the nematodes once you receive them, how to apply them, when to apply, how often, etc. Have you found a good place to purchase them, yet? The time to apply grub control is about 4-6 weeks after you see Japanese beetles or June bugs swarming your porch lights. If you don't have the parents, then you can't get the grubs. Don't just apply because you have not had grubs in many years. I've never had them and never used insecticide. Before you apply check to see that you have the critical mass of grubs. Your yard can handle up to about 12 grubs per square foot without you even noticing them. If you find more than that then you can start to get excited about them. They are a summer time issue. If you don't do anything about them all summer, then you don't have to do anything for the rest of the year, because they stop feeding.

Thanks. I am a bit confused though. We don't typically see Japanese beetles and June bugs until late June or early July around here (Chicagoland). 4-6 weeks from then would be in August which seems to contradict the Michigan State University article. Wouldn't that be too late for Imidacloprid?

Grub Control Should be applied in the early summer. My company uses Merit in June or July. This will keep the grubs from making it past the larvae stage and help your lawn tremendously. Occasionally we will use Dylox for special situations but, Merit works really well in most cases.

Gosh I would hate to be in conflict with Michigan State. I'm the person who goes around hating on compost, aeration, and daily watering.
What article? You never mentioned that you had an article. Why ask here if Michigan State has all the answers?

The general consensus around the Internet lawn forum gurus is that you don't anticipate problems and start spraying. Did you dig around and count the grubs you already have? Do you have more than 12 per square feet. If so then get out your poison. If not then save your money.
