New to Reel Mowing

I bought a reel mower (20" scotts) the other day. It's due to be delivered later today.

I plan on using it in my front yard on the hybrid bermuda.

No trees, no leaves, no dog poop, no real obstacles so I figure it will be ok.

Now for my question:

I have been letting my bermuda grow pretty tall (like 3-4 inches!) because I like it's lush green appearance, but obviously I want to bring it down to the appropriate height via the reel mower.

How do I begin this process?

I know I'm only supposed to cut 1/3 of the blade at a time, so it's going to take a while for it to get short. How often can I cut it? Every 2 days? Every 3?

Should I just scalp it? (Which I would hate to do because it's so pretty and green right now).

Thanks for any thoughts!
