Reason for lawn color difference?

I've been mowing all season at 4". I have a path of stepping stones that lead to my dock; last Tuesday I decided to make a final pass with my mower at 2.75" over these stones to make it easier to step from one to the other. Today I mowed again at 4" which made all the lawn even/level again and I noticed a clearly defined color difference between where I mowed shorter last Tuesday and the rest of the lawn.

Can someone please explain why this happened and also tell me if there's any reason why I shouldn't mow the entire lawn at 2.75" next time so my entire lawn will turn that darker green? My lawn has been looking very nice and thick, but it has a lot of light green and brown blades in it... that are now gone from the shorter height pass I made over the stones.
