rocky soil

I had a geo-thermal unit installed -- they had to dig a 5-foot-deep trench. Material from the bottom of the trench is now on the surface: rocks, clay, no organic material. There are big rocks 8 inches across, lots of 4-inchers, heaps and heaps of .5 to 1-inchers. I can't leave them there, grass won't grow -- or if it does there will be so many dry spots from rocks just under the surface. But I'm overwhelmed and don't know where to start.

Two trenches were dug, 17 feet long and 5 feet across. The rocky stuff from underneath extends over the existing soil though. There's no grass in that whole side lawn.

Should I roto-till it and pick up the stones that loosen up? And then go over it with a shovel to get the ones just under the surface? Should I build a screen and dump the rocky soil through?

Thanks for any help --
