New sod full of weeds

In April I had zoysia sod installed over an area that had once been a vegetable garden taken over by weeds. The installer did not use Round-up or other herbicide on the weeds prior to installation. He pulled, tilled and raked the weeds out. Then rolled the soil, placed the sod and rolled again. Now the weeds are popping up ALL over!

My question is: Can I used an herbicide on newly installed sod? If not, what can I do to keep the weeds from taking over my investment?? Please do not suggest pulling the weeds. I do that every morning and by the next day there are twice as many! I live in Atlanta, GA.

Sorry, but not much you can do right now other than hand pulling. By the time the sod is established, it will be mid summer and too hot to apply post-emergence. Wait til fall and next spring to get aggressive with pre-emrgence, then next year mop up what is left with post emergence.

If you do your routine maintenance for the rest of the year, zoysia will choke out a lot of the weeds so just be patient, zoysia takes a year or two to get going.

I probably wouldn't use preemergents before laying new sod, as many of them prevent cell division, thus preventing or slowing your grass' roots from growing. Weed killers on the other hand should be fine (check the labels first) as the grass is considered mature and the selective herbicides shouldn't affect them a few weeks after it is installed (I say a few weeks because weeds will probably take a while to pop up through the sod).

Answer depends on what kind of grass you have and what kind of weeds you have. The grass you should be able to answer but you might want to take pictures of the weeds. If you can take them when it is shady that is much better. The organic weed control is vinegar. Unfortunately it is non selective and will kill the grass, too.

Weeds and new Bermuda Sod

Yeah, I'm having the same issues with my sod that was put down at the end of march. The bermuda is doing fairly well, nice and green, but there are places in the back that has some type of thick blade grass/weed coming up in spots. Those spots have alot of that grass/weed. I'm hoping that the bermuda will take over. I'm going to lay off the watering to about 1 time a week and see how it reacts. I'll spot water alittle inbetween where some of sod wasn't taking, hopefully it'll help the bermuda spread into the semi-dead pieces. I've mowed it about 3 or 4 times already. I have a toro 20055 mower and the lowest it'll go is 1 1/4" which is about the lowest I can probably go on my terrian. Not that sod is uneven, just that I got banks and hills, and I don't think a reel mower will do well. Will keeping it at around 1 1/4" be enough to choke out the weeds?

Weed and Feed New Sod?

I am seeking advice on the feeding of my new sod lawn. It's been down about 6 weeks and has rooted very nicely. I noticed as we laid it that there were some weeds present, not a huge amount and only one type which was not very strongly rooted in the rolls. We did try to pull when we saw them, but in laying 1100 yards of sod it's easy to miss some! I was hoping to stay away from the traditional chemical treatments. I also noticed that the color is fading in some areas of the lawn. I can actually make out some of the original rolls by the variation in the color, not yellow just lighter. I wanted to use Milorganite but also need to address the weeds before they get out of hand. We did prepare the soil by removing alot of the poor quality fill dirt ( this was new construction) and bringing in lighter soil, tilling and letting settle for a year. I'm in southeast Michigan. Sorry about the duplicate question but "you're not gonna like the answer" was not posted while I was typing mine up. We were a few minutes apart and Bermuda beat me to it! I guess what's good for Bermuda is good for Zoysia?

Pretty much the only real difference at this point for you is Zoysia needs less fertlizer.
