suzuki 2 cycle port cleaning

1st post, hey all. I've got a Toro 22035 commercial that needs the exhaust port cleaned. It has quite a bit of gunk built up. What is the best way to clean this area. Should the cylinder be closing off the port. do I just scrape the port or use a dremmel? I'm guessing touching the cylinder is to be avoided. As you can see, my mechanical abilities are limited and I'm sorry for the simple question. I just don't want to mess up the mower, as it has been perfect since 1991. Thanks for your help.

Please do yourself a favor, and DON'T USE A DREMEL!! You will need a good solvent to soak and loosen the carbon deposits. Carb cleaners are okay, but buy a can of SEA FOAM @ Auto Zone, Advance etc, put some in a spray bottle soak the area real good and let it sit for several hours.Repeat a few times. Make sure the piston is over the exhaust port AND PROCEED WITH CAUTION by using a small flathead screwdriver or similar scraping device. Just be careful not to slip and gouge the piston skirt. TAKE YOUR TIME! Blow the area clean with compressed air or more solvent to make sure nothing falls back in or creeps up in to the cylinder when you draw the piston back. I also suggest running a full or at least semi-synthetic oil to keep oil residue and carbon buildup minimal if any to return once cleaned. Many GREAT oils on the market today, depending where you live, can even be shipped by UPS. Let us know how it turns out or if something else comes to mind.

Thanks for the info. Rest assured, I don't even own a dremmel. Just looking for an excuse to get one. I'll give this a try sometime this week. The mower is running fine, but I'm sure it will run even better.

Orange: you were correct I removed the carb and removed the bowl creaned the jet inside the carb, it looked nice and clean and then I removed the jet on top of the carb. the holes on the side of the jet were very clean I did not know there was a very small hole on the tip of this jet I unclogged that with a small wire and whala that was it The mower works like new again. All is well again. Thank-you

I picked up a 2 stroke toro 20684 at a yard sale, not running. I disassembeled carb and cleaned it with carb cleaner, put it all back together, and it will only run so long as one sprays gas into carb. Carb is getting fuel, and float and jet appear to work. Anyone got a clue? Clearly gas is not being imported into engine from carb. Compression feels fine. Do I need new carb gaskets to improve vacume? This is selfpropelled and im getting to old to push my lawn boy. Welcome all responses.

Crankcase gear? What's that?? Knocking in two cycle engines can be from detonation from carbon deposits, fuel/air mixtures that are too lean, octane that is too low, timing that is too advanced, and maybe a few other reasons. Piston slap is also a big noise maker in two cycles that are subject to abuse, oil starvation/seizures, or excessive wear.

I've had my Toro Model 20684 GTS (Suzuki 2-stroke) Mower new since 1988 and I never even changed the spark plug until yesterday. I am loosing power when it needs it and I can't understand why. It still starts in 2 or 3 pulls, the compression seems ok by the way it feels when I pull the starter rope, no scoring observed thru the intake port, (I have not checked the exhaust port yet), I rebuilt the carb yesterday because the inside diameter of the fuel line was grossly deteriorated, causing particles of rubber to clog the inlet to the carb. Interestingly the manual states no ethanol should be used because damage to the fuel system can result, I wonder if this was the cause for the grossly deteriorated fuel line? (All the gas around here states up to 10% ethanol!). The only issue with the rebuild is the governor setting, I need to figure out how to set that so the idle is back to low rpm as normal, not it seems to be left to cut speed if you know what I mean. My mistake was not to mark the relative position between the governor shaft and the governor arm, (any help anyone?). Well it looses power when it needs it, higher grass, and it is so frustrating, It runs great under no load. I believe the lower crank bearing is going because I can hear a knock of late that is not normal, like the knock you may hear when the bag gets full and the blade is hammering away at a grass clog, but it knocks when it is clear. I wonder if there can be an air leak by the lower bearing that cause its lose of power, but I also believe an air leak will likely cause it to seize up, so I am stumped. Is there anyone out there who can help me out? It's been a great unit but I refuse to believe it has reached the end of its service life! Help!!!!!!!!!!

Assuming the engine is running well and in tune as you stated, once you clean this area well, and run a clean burning synthetic oil, you'll more than likely never have to do this job again. Have fun!

I clean those port areas with a piece of wood shim broke in half and hold a wet vac hose while I chip away any deposits. Of course the piston is covering the port for this procedure.

What makes you think the port on the Suzuki needs cleaned?

I pulled the muffler the other day just for the heck of it and was surprised to find
the buildup. I'v always run a 50:1 mix of name brand oils such as stihl or echo. The muffler tip also shows alot of buildup. I'll clean that too.

I use a variation on Indy452's method. Piston down of course. I stick a 4 inch compressed air nozzle down the plug hole, aimed at port while chipping away. As he stated, a piece of wood, ice cream stick works well, is advised.

While at it, check your de-comp hole. It is in the middle of the flat land to the right of the port while looking at it. It is probably filled in as well. This small hole allows some compression to escape while cranking but is to small to let any important amount to escape at running rpm. It is roughly .050' in size, guessing. I use a .030' jet drill to make the initial opening and follow with a welders file wire. All the while still blowing in the plug hole with compressed air. Of course you should avoid looking down the port while removing carbon with compressed air blowing it out, or wear a good face mask.

Do not use a metal tool to clean the exhaust ports.

I use plastic. Soak it good with sea foam. If it won't come off with plastic, soak it some more. Wood dowel from the depot will work too. NOTHING METAL.
Keep the piston at tdc.

I never ran into a suzuki that needed to be cleaned.
A lot of lawn boys but not one suzuki.
Guess I haven't been around long enough.
