I would try to relax about your lawn for this year. Expect it to be full of weeds. Live with it. BUT, once the summer heat breaks, you should plan to get rid of the weeds ONCE and reseed. Otherwise let the weeds grow as best they can (not that you need to help them along).

Good management is the best defense against weeds. Be sure you water only when the grass needs it, but at least one inch at a time when you do water. This should translate to watering about once a week. Then mow at the mower's highest setting to shade out any weeds that might start to grow.

If you want to you can get a $20 Weed Hound tool to pluck the tap rooted weeds like dandelions.

In the fall, run a power rake over the weeds to chew them up, rake or blow that stuff away, seed on top of the soil, roll the seed down, and start watering daily to germinate the seed. Once the seed is up and growing, then back off to weekly watering again and let the grass grow up tall.

Dense, tall grass is your best defense against weeds.

Its still early in the season. Your KBG should look much better by fall. Too bad you couldnt follow the practice of light mist watering three times a day when it was planted. I know how difficult that is. Try to keep your lawn from going dormant this summer. Dchall gave excellent advice, therefore I won't repeat his words. You will have some lawn repair to do this fall and next spring. Continue to reads the posts here and develope a plan for your lawn. By this time next year, you can have a beautiful lawn. Your results will reflect the efforts made. Good luck with your new home and lawn.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And, I've needed many pounds of cure over my gardening "career".

First problem was trying to seed this time of year in zone 6. Its hard to get cool season grasses to establish when seeding in the spring, especially fairly late (guessing as to your exact whereabout). Although, sometimes you just have to do what you can, like if you just bought the house or just got it built.

Follow Dchall's advice. Then this fall read all you can on this forum about when and how to do overseeding and I think you will have much happier results with fall seeding results. It will generally provide a much better payoff on "reward" versus the amount of effort put in.

And, like Dchall says, don't let the one set back get you too down. Lawns will do that to you.

Oh, and if you want to try to save much of whatever grass you do have come up from the spring seeding, absent alot of rain you will need to water heavily in the hot months. The roots just aren't going to be established enough to keep it going.

We did seed as early as the local rake and seed guys would do it-- I think it was April 28th. Apart from no rain until recently we have had a decent run of weather-- mostly sixties and seventies.

Can I still try to overseed now? Weather has been reasonably cool-- projected in the 60s today. Otherwise I gather I just take care of what I have and deal with the weeds and a fresh overseeding in the fall--?

KBG germinates and grows extremely slow from seed. If your lawn is just barely beginning to resemble a lawn ( "looks almost like lawn"), then all is not lost. You must keep it watered however. To re-seed now would not be effective, especially if you can only water once a day. Your thought of "just taking care of what you have, dealing with the weeds, and overseeding in the fall" may be your best course of action. Try to keep your lawn from going dormant this summer. Light application of fertilizer in mid june will be good for your lawn. Consider organic fertilization, its very effective and good for your lawn and soil.
