Mystery fruit tree #1

The original owner of our property planted a wide variety of fruits and nuts when he built is home here in 1940. Some of it survives, some of it died along the way, and some of it we removed, notably some grafted black walnuts that prevented us from having a vegetable garden. We've working at slowly building the orchard back to its former glory, with our own interests expressed.

Along the way we've found some trees that puzzle us. Here is the first one. Our best guess is that this is a quince but we are not sure. The leaves don't look right and the fruit is smaller than I had expected, with less seed inside. Based on one taste test (not mine!) the fruit is incredibly astringent, to the point that the impulsive taster thought he might have poisoned himself. (He was fine.)

Right now the tree has young yellow fruit, brown, smooth skinned fruit, and wrinkled, raisin-y looking fruit. The size ranges from about an inch to over two inches in length.

I'll post pictures of the other two trees in separate posts.
