My fig tree is about 1 and 1/2 ft. tall. When will it fruit?

My fig tree from Lowes is only 1 and 1/2 ft tall but it already has one fig on it. Will this fig grow to full size or will it fall off? Like I said the tree is small but I hope I get that fig off of it this year. I dont know how old it is. Thanks again :)

It is a common Brown Turkey fig :)

Fruitnut, the Chinese Mormon (blooming) is 5-6 ft. tall, and the Moorpark (leafing) is 8-9 ft. tall. So I guess more energy of the Moorpark went into growing taller & longer branches, and a top pruning might send it the proper message. I planted them both (from Miller Nurs.) 2 years ago. Look at the new growth on plant. Follow the leaf's stem to where it meets the branch, right there you may or may not see a little nub forming. If so thats the start of a fig embryo. As a idea about 80 days or so from that point to maturity or near maturity depending on climate,cultivar, etc. Martin

thanks rhome-according to the specs, the viking is 5 7/8", and the sharp is 7 1/8". so, its less than 2" difference. i'm just having a hard time visualizing. Or, better yet, trying to recall exactly what it is if anything that i'm going to run into problems with when i try to put it in there and if the taller height is really going to mean alot in the end. our coffee mugs would fit and so would plates, bowls, etc...i'm hoping for feedback from people who have the sharp 1.0 cu ft microwave drawer to weigh in on how much of a difference it would be to them to have the extra height. my current microwave only has 7" now if you only count the usable area on top of the carousel. it has a browning coil on the top that takes up space and if you take the carousel plate and piece that turns the carousel, it seems alot larger.

I'd use the 5:1:1 for both, but leave the lime out of the soil for the miracle fruit tree. If you're going to use 4-4-1, you might as well buy Miracle-Gro and forgo the inconvenience of making the soil because the results will be the same ...... unless the second 4 represents the volume of perlite and not peat. Because citrus does like an extra measure of Ca, you might consider adding a little gypsum to the soil when you make it. This will provide the extra Ca w/o raising pH as the lime would. Keep in mind that in highly organic media like the 5:1:1 mix, plants do better at about a full pH number LOWER than the suggested pH for mineral soils. What I would do to address the pH concerns: Fill an open container of a given volume with tap water and leave it rest for a day. The dissolved CO2 will gas off and the pH will rise accordingly. After the CO2 gasses off, add enough white vinegar or citric acid (where they sell wine making supplies) to bring the pH of the water down to your target pH, then you know how much to add to your tap water (no need to let it rest before using - just to establish how much acidifier to use). I should have asked if your fig tree is in a pot, or in the ground.

18" isn't very tall. Is the little trunk a sturdy little one, or is it very thin?

It might be better to remove the fig and let the tree grow this season to gain strenght and more size. I know it's hard not to let the fig stay on, but you might be happier in the long run if you wait until next year to let figs grow on the tree.

I think it was BT figs that I first tasted when I was very little. They were very good, too. Good luck with your new tree. I'm assuming it's a new tree. Is it? If not then definitely remove the fig from it and concentrate on feeding and growing the tree this season.

Thank you :) Its little because its in a pot and the nurserymen pruned it back to keep it small. It seemed a bit harsh at the time but he said it would be all the better for it. Very sturdy little tree. I suppose giving the roots time would be best for it. Thank you :D

Hi Cayla,

That's good the nurseryman pruned it back because that will make it branch out rather than stay one little trunk, usually. Figs don't read the books. :)

I was having trouble with several of my little potted trees and I cut them halfway back at the start of the season and they then decided to put out more bushiness and have set figs for the first time. They're 3 years old. Could be they would have done so anyway, but they look a lot fuller now and there are figlets on them.

Yes, growing the little tree to give it a good foundation would be my top priority.

Meanwhile--Walk, or drive around your area and look for fig trees. What zone are you in?/where do you live? It might make a difference where you live because if you live in a cold area, then you might not see trees until their owners bring them out when it's warm enough, or dig up/unwrap their trees. It's fun to search out fig trees.

I put in a Celeste last fall. It has a lone fig and the tree is barely a foot tall. I think I'm going to let one ripen for the novelty but if I see a second fig I'll have have to bring out the scissors.

I found fertilizer plays a big part. Last year I tried using fert with high K like superphosphate mixed in with my usual regiment and all of my figs were putting out figlets, even the little 6 inch twigs I got from a nursery in qt pots. I did a lot of pinching. Just a thought.
