I've been looking around for a replacement for my 20 yr old JD 14SB which has served me well. I cut a lot of grass with that mower.

I wanted a new mower with a bail drive that would basically pull the mower along and didn't want anything where I had to apply constant pushing action.

Anyhow I picked up a Honda HRX217HXA the other day for $730 and got an extra yr warranty from a promotion going on. I only used it a little the other day and it seems to function well. It cuts thing into smaller pieces and has better suction as it even sucked up birdseed on the ground near the birdfeeder. We'll see how it holds up long term. It appears to be put together good. Time will tell.

That is a very nice mower, should serve you well for years with reasonable care.

It really is too bad that John Deere no longer makes mowers that could replace your 14SB. Their new line is pretty pathetic if you ask me (my local dealer thinks they are too).

The last Cub Cadets I saw were somewhat cheap mowers and drive mechanisms coupled to the very good Kawasaki FJ180V motor. They weren't that cheap, either, and did not have blade brake/clutches. There aren't a lot of mowers that have that. The two that come to mind would be some of the Hondas and the Toro Prolines (not cheap). Maybe the higher-end Deeres still have it (also not cheap). If you can forego the BBC, then you have a lot more options and one big part that won't break. For ~$500 you can get a nice Snapper EZ Speed (used to be called Hi Vacs), or one of the Toro SB4 (or whatever they call what used to be Super Recyclers). Lawnboy has a promising new line out with Honda engines - search here for recent threads about them. I'd say visit some dealers and see what they have in the $500 range. Box stores are not your best bet to get good info or products.

Count your blessings, dadoes. My wife's twin sister is on their 3 plasma TV in about 7 years, like some other folks, her late husband thought they had a better picture. My best friend had his repaired, (Power supply), but it went out a year later, so He replaced it with an LCD TV. I bought my Sharp Aquos the same day another one of my friend's did, 7 years ago now, and neither has ever needed a service call and both still have great pictures. I know this is just a small sampling, but I doubt we are unique in our experiences of Plasma vs LCD Reliability. Gary

Thank You both for answering back. I was kinda leaning towards the Pentair or Ray-Pak. Over the years, I have only had to replace the gas valve once and the igniter once on my old Anthony heater. My heater is the only un green item left for the 22 year old pool. I am going out to test the valve and igniter right now, and make my mind up weather to go with a new one, or revive it one more time? Have a good day. Ed

You definitely moved into the premium mower class with the HRX! One of the handful of mowers in that league. I count the Lawn-Boy aluminum-deck/Honda engined models and the Toro version (Super Bagger) in that group too, along with the Toro and Honda commercial models. Snapper comes to mind, but I'm not familiar with them, so I'll leave that to others. It's very nice to have a top of the line mower. I had a xenoy deck Honda for a few years and came to really appreciate it. The deck is more flexible than the metal ones, but this acts like a 'suspension', transmitting less shock through the handle on bumpy ground. The xenoy is unparalled in absorbing blade noise and engine vibration, and of course there can be no corrosion in it, and it will never need painting. If it starts looking bad, you just polish it - the color goes all the way through.

Great mower! IÂm on the 3rd season with mine. Very strong engine that powers through even very tall grass. I even had to cut wet grass a few times with it and it bags it like itÂs dry with nothing left behind. I have used many mowers in my day and when younger used to cut commercial. This is by far the best mower I have ever used. One of the nicest features is the vesa mow where you can set part mulch/bag. I also like the fact that nothing seems to stick to the deck and it stays very clean underneath. My folks have a Honda from the mid 70Âs that still runs strong. Nothing ever done except blades and oil changes and a new rope/recoil. I donÂt believe they are built to stand the test of time like the old ones but they cut much better with the twin blades. I looked at the Toro Super Recycler and liked it also, but at the time only came with the B&S L Head. I see you can get it now with the Honda 160. The HRX has the 190 delivering a little more power.
