Amending sandy soil with kitty litter?

The previous owner had a 10'x10' sand box in the yard. When he decided to extend the existing grass to cover it, most of the sand was not removed before planting grass. So that part of the lawn becomes brown very easily in the summer.

Last year, I did a top dressing with compost over the entire lawn and the whole lawn including the sandy area looked great all year. But of course, compost doesn't last long in sand and it's brown again.

I could of course, remove the sod, replace the sand with topsoil and put back the existing sod but it is worth trying kitty litter? I have read that kitty litter is a clay product that will disperse in the soil and improve water/nutrient retention. I'm thinking it may require too much to make a huge difference.
