Zoysia or Bermuda?
Comments (2)Bermuda in STL? Not a good idea. Zoysia isn't much better in your area either, but a little bit better than Bermuda providing you only choose Meyers aka Z-52 as it is the most cold tolerant of the Zoysia grass varieties. With that said expectt it to be straw color or dormant for 5 to 6 months out of the year, which means your labs are likely to beat it down to dust or bare dirt during the dormant season killing it....See MoreHere I go again!
Comments (4)Thanks t-weed, and like I said... Here I go again Will the Fescue burn in the heat even with an irrigation system? Also is it as thin as they say? The only variety of Zoysia sod I've been able to find around here is Meyers, is that a good strain? Ive read about Empire, El Toro, Jamur, Zeon, etc... but have heard that Palisades tops them all in denseness and ease of cut. There seems to be plenty of farms in your state(Tx) that provide these but none across the river. Do you know of any? All that I've called deal mostly in Bermuda Tif-this and U-that. One online company sells (Empire?) plugs, 3"x3" for $200 plus another $200 for delivery, basically what I could get the Meyers sod for here. I'm at a loss as to which would be better. I know 3x3 plugs would grow better/spread faster than the normal 1x1, but is Empire a better strain RE: shade, denseness, etc...? There is one lady who was trying to push the Turfallo Shadow Turf I had looked at earlier. The price has come down somewhat to $125 per plug tray(72 plugs ea) which would put my price at just under $1600, for BUFFALLO GRASS! This is becoming very frustrating! Maybe I'll just pour some green-dyed concrete and be done with it. Thanks again to the weed and all others who chime in on this one, especially if you have info on Zoysia sod distributors in Oklahoma....See MoreThinking about seeding with Bermuda
Comments (20)There are other alternatives for establishing turf from seed. I cleared an additional 6000 sq. feet in my back yard 3 years ago (tractor and box blade). The adjoing 4,000 sq. feet is Tif 419 sod. The first year I seeded seashore paspalum (it was fairly expensive). It came in nicely, looked close to bermuda, more shade tolerant. I planted way too late (labor day), so I lost all of it to cold temps. Last year I seeded with Triangle bermuda on memorial day, thinking it would handle shade and drought (some of the area only gets 4 hours full sun) better than 419. It came in beautifully. More coarse than 419 but nice none the less. Along comes Sept and we experience the 2nd most rain in 100 years (after 3 years of drought). The area flooded over 4 feet so I lost 80% of the triangle. Two weeks ago I decided to go a different route. I don't want to cut two heights (fescue would probably do ok) so I seeded with True Putt, creeping blue grass. So far I'm paniced because I see NO germination. I hope you will look at some of these options based on my experience. Seashore paspalum does very well in Florida (can survive salt water). Good luck! Zoysia is just too slow to establish and may look bad for the first year....See Morelawns in northern wv
Comments (1)Creeping bentgrass, normally thought of as a weed in turf, might work for you. Kentucky bluegrass will fill in, but maybe not fast enough for your dogs. Fescue is NOT the lawn for you. The dogs will claw it out and it will not refill. It would need to be reseeded every fall. And that would likely be unsuccessful with the dogs. Have you considered putting down 6 inches of chipped tree mulch? That is excellent for dogs and will help your soil immensely....See MoreRelated Professionals
