Dogs , Zoysia, and Bermuda, do they mix?
Comments (7)I am located in north central Arkansas, in the foothills of the Ozarks. Last year I had to have 6 dumptruck loads of soil brought in and spread. Our yard was red clay. I spread bermuda grass seed and sprigged even though it was late summer. I think it might have survived if we hadn't had so much rain in the last few months. My yard still has water standing in several places. It has literally drowned the grass. Now all I have are wheat stalks, a very few runners of bermuda and MUD. So my husband said lets just go with sod. Today I measured the front yard and it is 10,200 sq feet. I already have bermuda on a hillside and it done wonderful, but yes it required lots and lots of mowing. My intial idea was to have bermuda and then overseed with a rye grass to keep it green in the winter. So I am really open about what type of grass. I just want grass instead of clay or mud. If you will remember I have four dogs. So having grass will help keep my house a lot cleaner. And I won't have to give so many doggie baths. Also I have a wet weather spring on the upside of the yard. When we built our house my husband dug a ditch and filled it with gravel to keep the water off our house. He connected it to the french drain. Now with the top soil I had brought in, the water runs down toward the house before it soaks down to the gravel. Any ideas on how to cope with this? My husband says we have to remove some of the dirt. Right now I have to much water, but I know this summer will be dry. And then I am going to wish I put in a sprinkler. But that is a whole other topic. Thanks for the help! Sorry so long....See MoreHere I go again!
Comments (4)Thanks t-weed, and like I said... Here I go again Will the Fescue burn in the heat even with an irrigation system? Also is it as thin as they say? The only variety of Zoysia sod I've been able to find around here is Meyers, is that a good strain? Ive read about Empire, El Toro, Jamur, Zeon, etc... but have heard that Palisades tops them all in denseness and ease of cut. There seems to be plenty of farms in your state(Tx) that provide these but none across the river. Do you know of any? All that I've called deal mostly in Bermuda Tif-this and U-that. One online company sells (Empire?) plugs, 3"x3" for $200 plus another $200 for delivery, basically what I could get the Meyers sod for here. I'm at a loss as to which would be better. I know 3x3 plugs would grow better/spread faster than the normal 1x1, but is Empire a better strain RE: shade, denseness, etc...? There is one lady who was trying to push the Turfallo Shadow Turf I had looked at earlier. The price has come down somewhat to $125 per plug tray(72 plugs ea) which would put my price at just under $1600, for BUFFALLO GRASS! This is becoming very frustrating! Maybe I'll just pour some green-dyed concrete and be done with it. Thanks again to the weed and all others who chime in on this one, especially if you have info on Zoysia sod distributors in Oklahoma....See Morehelp! looking for the best of both worlds in grass
Comments (1)You have to make a choice really. Because you are in Va, you can have bermuda, but it will be dormant for 5 to 7 months of the year. If you plant a cool season grass for winter with the hopes of having bermuda in the summer, you'll have to kill off the cool season grass in early Spring so that the bermuda can green up. Otherwise, you'll have a nasty looking lawn of stressed cool season grass mixed with stressed bermuda. You might want to seed a blend of KBG this fall, and then re-seed it again in the Spring and next Fall. In your area, it will likely be easier to maintain than bermuda. Just my opinion....See Morelawns in northern wv
Comments (1)Creeping bentgrass, normally thought of as a weed in turf, might work for you. Kentucky bluegrass will fill in, but maybe not fast enough for your dogs. Fescue is NOT the lawn for you. The dogs will claw it out and it will not refill. It would need to be reseeded every fall. And that would likely be unsuccessful with the dogs. Have you considered putting down 6 inches of chipped tree mulch? That is excellent for dogs and will help your soil immensely....See Morefrederick_gardener
