is it too late for CGM?

I was told by my wife that "we" should start an organic program this year for the lawn. We intend to get a dog, so for his health and to avoid synthetics, I've been reading all about CGM and hand weeding.
I have about a 10,000 sq.ft. back yard, that has lots of nice grass, but a decent portion of crabgrass and clover. I want a healthy lawn, and less CG and clover. So, am I too late this spring for CGM? will I just be fertilizing my CG?
got a weed hound, and plan to mow higher and deep water to start a change of care plan. any advice on fertilizers for 2009?
