help! yard shade problem, want to sod

I have an area that has gone bare from neglect over the past 3 years and i need some help with how to repair it. See the video i shot of it for more details.

http://www.interestsyou.com/product/yard.html

the area used to have grass growing there with the little amount of light that it receives. the ground is very compacted and has alot of erosion do to runoff which is another reason to sod.

I've tried seed but can't get it to take hold with the spring showers.

what type of seed should i look at?

looking for a ballpark answer on what kind of price can i look at spending on a 30ft x 30 ft area?

is now the time to do this or should i wait till it's a bit warmer for sod?

the shade will allow me more time to work with this thru the summer keeping it from burning up.

I'm going to get the trees thinned but i'm not sure how much that will make a difference as i can only realistically do so much with the huge tree.

thanks for any help and advice!
