World's Longest Yard Sale

Hi, all! I haven't been on in a while and you all have been VERY busy! I've missed so much! I am probably not posting in the right spot, but we are thinking about going to the Hwy 127 sale in August. I am hoping to find some good junk and wondered if any of you have been? If so, what kinds of things did you find and is it worth a 5 or 6 hour drive to get there? Also, are there any areas from Tennessee to Alabama that are better to "start" in? Thanks in advance. I'm off to look at all the neat things you've been making while I have been away!

I envy you. I would love to go, but I'm in Texas. I'm waiting to go back to Warrenton in October.

Too far for me, too, but saw it on PBS. With that many yards, how can you go wrong - besides going by way of motorcycle with no saddle bags?! LOL

Gotta think traveling in one of the least expensive places to live has got to give you good deals on stuff. We want to see a picture of all your finds! You're going on my version of a wonderful second honeymoon vacation. LOL

Hi, Joyce1 many of us got our rosy start in cheap chain store roses! Propagation: please do not propagate any roses that are still under patent, and i suspect many of yours are. If you check out each rose at HelpMeFind there is a place at the bottom of the rose page that will state the patent number if it is still under patent. Leaving the propagating to hybirdizers and licensed propagators ensures that their livelihood is protected and we consumers will continue to have access to quality plant material for years to come. As for your selections, the only one I have actual experience with is New Day. I bought it last summer as a pathetic Home Depot potted rose, and it thanked me by being a beautiful, healthy yellow bloomer all season! Unfortunately it did not survive our brutal winter. I wasn't surpised, but for five bucks, can I really complain??? Blue Girl is reputed to be a dog of a rose; you might be far enough south to make it work. NOTHING repels Jap beetles, sorry. The control measures you listed are really your only viable options if you do not want to poison all the rest of the bugs, good and bad, that visit your roses. I would take your roses back outside, to get some sun and rain. If they have been under cover at Walmart, give them gradual sun rather than a full day right off the bat. Good luck, have fun!

I love good flea markets that sell junk and not so much new stuff and clothes, altho there is one here that sells mostly new stuff, appliances, clothes, etc...mostly hispanics...but once in awhile there will be a good buy on a piece of junk because they really aren't interested in stuff like that usually. I like yard sales, estate sales, auctions, dumpster diving, curb shopping. I am mostly into stuff for the garden now, since I've filled my house a few times over, but I won't turn down a neat piece of junk for the house. Last week I found two old faux bois planters. I had to think "WWMD?" Ha! Not really. (What would Martha do?) Martha collects faux bois...fake wood...made out of cement. I jumped at them for $10 for both.

My husband & I have been twice and have loved both times! However, we live in central Indiana so we started the first time in KY and went to the middle of TN. Last year we drove the interstate to TN and came back north. We have brought home many treasures and at very good prices - there's something for everyone! Most dealers were eager to haggle over prices too! However, beware, Route 127 for miles has no lodging and what there is most is booked up. Take food and drinks. For us, the trip both times was worth the money & time as we don't take regular vacations. We love looking at other people's junk and love the thrill of finding something unique. You can stop at one place and spend a couple hours and then go for miles before finding another site. But, if you like junking for your garden, you will absolutely love this opportunity. By the way, I've been reading this site for weeks and have never posted and I just love all your garden junking ideas. You all inspire me so!

I'm with Valentinetbear, this would be my dream vacation! lol! Every year I go to the 100 Mile Garage Sale along the Mississippi River on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides of the river. You have to reserve a hotel room months in advance and you can go for miles without seeing any garage sales and then you'll see dozens of them. Have a great time and take lots of pictures!

i am sure hoping that my husband and i can do this- we've never been but have wanted to! we live in southeast alabama so would start in gadsden and go up above chattanooga

Thank you all so much for the information! I had taped the show on HGTV and after watching it, really wanted to go. We have not made any reservations, so we are already making a mistake! This kind of vacation for me is like a spa retreat for some folks! My mother, her best friend, my oldest son and I are planning to make the trip. I will take my camera and of course show you any junk we happen to find. Thanks!
