If you can't beat 'em, join 'em - hubby now has garden junk

Last summer, we lost our home, belongings, and much garden junk in the floods here. I did manage to save a few things, but when we moved to our new place my husband said he didn't think the junk really went with the style of the house. (What? You don't think my early-1900's farm implements go with our 1950's ranch home?? LOL) I did put my "glass lamp art" by the front door because I do think it goes, and I put a couple small pieces of statuary out in the perennial flower bed that I'm currently expanding. But for the most part, I haven't done anything yet with the rest of the junk I managed to save.

So it seemed kind of ironic when DH decided he was going to put this thing I call "Armored Guy" in the flower bed out front where he has his Marine Corps flag, US flag, and red/white/blue petunias. Armored Guy is a tin sculpture uncovered in some weeds here last fall, which my hubby spray-painted silver. I told him, "NOW who is hooked on the garden junk?" He said, "That's not JUNK, that's my warrior. He looks good there..."

Of course I had to agree!

And here's our front entry area - everything in this spot was rescued from the old place, including Mary, her pedestal, the lamps and hooks, and the hostas. Only the petunia basket is new:

I never thought to just hang the lamp globes on a hook....how clever !! They look marvelous with the sun shining through them. Oh, I also love the tin guy !

I agree with Eric_OH that junk and other 'props' do not define a cutting edge design. I wonder how much of this drive to "think outside the box" (the phrase itself now cliched) stems from people's urge to shock the neighbors? As cady stated: "I don't seem to have exceeded the tolerance range so far. Maybe it's time to try a big, rusted scrap metal sculpture in the front bed." As a fan of native plants, I sense that many native plant enthuseists are spoiling for a fight: "I know the Latin name of this plant, therefore it's not a weed, na, na!" If you really want to shock the neighbors, try this: a swept dirt yard. Old-fashioned and full of history, this type of landscape would nevertheless stick out in modern landscape. But would it be innovative? Or even good design? Are we trying to being individual for the sake of individualism? Is this necessarily a good thing? Traditional designs have stood the test of time because they are good...this era's really good innovations will become the next generations' traditionals. But are we all geniuses that need to attempt this level of innovation, or will we ultimately be disappointed??

Jeanne, I had a dog that refused to have her picture taken so I usually got a picture of her backside. So the paw in the crotch is a little better! I just love those big swings! Whenever I get a yard, that is one of the first things I want to add to it. Maybe I can finally get a picture of myself swinging. Kirk, your little boy looks so adorable! You have taught your little Grasshopper well. lol! With your beautiful yard, I can fully understand why the whole family would feel sleepy at the end of the day. Jules, great pictures of you and your family. It is great to put faces with names. Susiesunshine, we will have to see a picture of you sometime even if I have to come over there and take it myself! lol! For a little background on my picture by the squad car ... my friends and I went to Rhinelander, WI, the home of the Hodag (google it to see what it looks like). We went to take our picture by the giant Hodag statue near the town's tourist center. All of a sudden, the cops show up and ask us if we went inside the building. We looked at them oddly and said no because a sign said it was closed. Apparently someone broke into the building and the alarm went off. We took the opportunity to take our pictures by the police car while the police were inside checking things out. Bob wanted to take it for a ride. My one friend did a Vanna White pose next to it. Love it all Jeanne, I went on conversations & tried to log-in since they said I was off, it keeps coming up that there is no GJF Ha! Sorry to hijack your post but I will be gone for awhile. Mom in hospital 9 days with AF & trying to care for dad(stroke 1 yr ago) at home. Bro. had to fly to East Coast for business. Other bro. came in sick-so it goes .I'm on my own except for DD some & lady taking care of dad some mornings(& snooping through the house!!) Sunflowers- Now ya see 'em, now ya don't?

I'm having the same trouble trying to plant Sunflowers and while I haven't seen them, I'm almost positive it is the squirrels. We don't have deer or rabbit. It might have been a groundhog, but he would have eaten a lot of things and made a huge mess. I've sown the seeds three times already. After the first set of seedlings disappeared [all but two] I sowed more seed and put hardware cloth down over the seed area and some of those edges were sharp. They still managed to get in between them a little but it looked like they gave up. But, to get back at me, they pulled out the two remaining sunflower seedlings that were about 6 inches tall already. After the second set of seeds germinated, I didn't want them to grow up through the wire, so I took it off and weeded around them. Back they came and did the same thing. So I've started the third bath which are already up. I've kept the wire covering on and bent it up a little to allow the sunflower seedlings a little room to grow. This time I am not going to weed around them because I think disturbing the soil at all, is a trigger for attracting them to the area. I even left the pulled sunflower seedlings right where they left them. If this doesn't work, I'm going to try using the netting I have over the strawberries, that seems to be working fine for the strawberries. Maybe that way I can get them to a decent size before they can get at them. I hope.

Too funny! My husband is a college prof who teaches computer courses...I'm starting to fear the death of his computer...I'm not sure I'd be happy with an old computer monitor planted with petunias in the yard!

Nice to have someone on your side. My DH is going to take some stuff to the landfill today and I had to tell what I wanted to keep for my Garden Junk projects. Unfortunately I'm not there to supervise.

Janet- I tip my hat to you for what you have been through. Flooding is as heartbreaking as fire or any other home wrecker.

I use to have an armoured guy in my garden. Back in the 60's and early 70's (I believe), Spanish (European style) was all the rage. These suits of armor were produced back then. Yours looks wonderful painted silver!!!

The glass globes really add a special touch to your new garden. Lovely!!!!

I love that little "dude"! And the warrior too! I'm glad your DH is embracing the junk wagon. Love the globes hanging on hooks. Do you have lights inside them? I had a white globe from a ceiling fan, with a string of Christmas lights inside, hanging from a shepards hook by the back stairs. The hail destroyed the globe. Someday, I'll find another one.

Thanks, all, for your sweet comments. Vickie, no there are no lights in the globes. The blue one actually has a very large chunk of it missing - my poor hubby was trying to "fix it up" somehow one day (he didn't like the way the top was attached or something)... and dropped it. I almost cried, it was/is my favorite globe and so far has been one-of-a-kind - I've never seen another one like it! I now have a dark green one from my dad's estate waiting to go "into production" to join these others.

By the way, Armored Guy actually replaces Connie the Conquistador - Connie was a plaster statue that I found dumped (along with that pedestal Mary's now using) in a Pizza Hut parking lot a few years ago. Conn did not make it through the flood, he completely fell apart. Here's his picture from an evening in 2004 - VERY 60's/70's, no? :)

in my garden that has been hanging
there for several years. And I have
a bust of a conquistador--it was in
the garden, but I washed it off and
used it for the 450th birthday of
Pensacola this year of when the Spaniards landed.
We are the oldest settlement in the US, but
a hurricane demolished it and was not resettled
until after the others were considered permanent.

Janet, sorry to hear about the floods, that must be just awful to live thru.

I love your "glass lamp art" and your DH's non-junk warrior is pretty cool too. My DH's idea of garden art would be an old car - if I "let" him! LOL I told him if he starts renovating old cars again he better build a tall fence first! I'm sooo over having old cars in my driveway.

I'm of the opinion that if I like it, it "goes". It's why I have eclectic home AND garden decor. Much more fun that way for me.

Your new place looks great! Also love the globes, the "saved" Hostas, and your DH's GJ! I think your "saves" from your old house will add "comfort" and "good vibes" to your new home...nothing like old farm implements...I have my g'pa's old hay rake & also a hosta garden around old horse-drawn sickle mower! Go with what feels good to ya! Your new place looks lovely...and will look forward to more pics! Stamina, girl! You've got it! Jeanne S.
p.s. In the 70's I had 3 musketeers with their drawn swords (I made them in ceramics! LOL!) on my dining room wall!

That's right, Janet, good thing your DH just went ahead and joined 'em! Love the armored man, he's quite unique in your garden! As time goes by, you might find more cool metal items like swords, or something like that to add to it. But it's perfect the way it is, just that your DH has been bitten by the Junk Bug now, he'll probably need another fix :-) ~tenderlee

It is wonderful to have a partner in junking isn't it? Love that your DH got the junking bug and is doing so well at it too! His warrior is very cool and looks great spiffed up with silver paint. Love your hanging lamps too. It is wonderful to see them transformed to pretty garden art. Great job on your new digs!
