I can't tell for sure, but I'm guessing it's either barnyard grass or quackgrass. If it's the latter, it's tough to get out of your turf. Look for the clasping where the leaf blade comes out of the stem and the runners underneath the soil surface. Most grassy weeds are identified in that area, by hairy ligules, auricle style, etc. If it's barnyard grass, that's a little easier to control since it's an annual.

Certainty turf herbicide will control quackgrass, although it may take a couple of apps. Annual grass killers will take out barnyard grass and preemergents will prevent it since it has to reproduce from a seed every year.

Judging by your yard, you may want to think about nuking the whole thing with roundup and starting over. What type of grass are you trying to grow there?

Along the coast at this time of year that might be Johnson grass, too. Does it stop growing or if you leave it alone, will it grow to five or six feet high? Whatever it is, dig or pull it out.

In any case, what do you want to do about your lawn? You have a mix of every grass known to man in there. Are you okay with just mowing it down as long as it's green, or would you like it to look more uniform...like a lawn. If you want more of a lawn appearance it is going to have to have water every 2 weeks during the cooler parts of the year and every week in the summer. If that is okay, then you have some St Augustine in there that will return and choke out most everything else. You don't have to do anything but water and mow. The dead St Aug that I see is an indication that the watering has been neglected in the past. Dried out St Augustine will not come back. It's dead.

If you can commit to watering, can you commit to weekly mowing? Your bermuda looks like it is doing very well but so does the living St Aug. If you want the bermuda to look very good, lower your mower all the way when you mow. If you want the St Augustine to look good, raise your mower all the way when you mow. If you have both grasses and keep the deck low, it will always look weedy with St Augustine (coarse blades). If you have both and raise the deck all the way, it will always look like St Augustine and the bermuda "weed" will only be visible to the careful eye. In San Antonio that grass mix becomes fully St Augustine when it gets regular watering and is mowed high.

I'm not sure if its Johnson grass or quackgrass yet. Anyone have a link to a site that will help identify Johnson grass? I haven't found any good sites, but it does look really close to quackgrass. I was going to resod this year with zorro zoysia, but we're going to have to put that off. I just want to keep the weeds at bay until I can resod. I will probably through down some Bermuda seed to fill in the bear spots in the mean time. Lack of water while the house was for sale and a big grub problem kill a lot of the yard last year.

I don't know if throwing down bermuda is such a good idea. You might think about annual rye or something like that. It would be less invasive and die off this summer when you're putting in the zoysia. Bermuda grass is very tough to get under wraps and probably won't germinate for a while.

Keeping the weeds at bay is a good idea. Make sure you kill off or pull any weeds you see before they go to seed. If it does turn out to be johnson grass or quack grass, do not rip them out. Using repeated apps of Roundup is much more effective because of the aggressive rhizomes.

you can rule out johnson / sudan grass. at that stage they look like sprouting corn. hard to say exactly but it appears to be rescue grass. if it is, it will die on its own as soon as it gets hot.
