few splits in my split leaf philodendrum

I have had a split leaf philodendrum plant for several years that I started from a cutting. It grows like crazy and for all intents and purposes appears to be very happy. However, very few of the leaves actually have splits and those that do just have one on one side. The plant I took the cutting from has lots of splits and I have started them before where the first few leaves didn't split but soon they were emerging with splits. I would appreciate any thoughts on what I should do differently. It is getting the same treatment as my others and is in a much better lighting situation than the parent plant. Thanks in advance.

Young plants don't split much. As they mature, you get more splits. I don't think you can do much except wait patiently.

Since he has had it for several years, perhaps maturity is not the issue. The monstera I grew from seed began splitting in its third year. The cutting I took from that plant put out split leaves immediately.

What kind of lighting does the plant get? I grow mine close to a west window, where it gets quite a bit of sun.

It sounds like it's starved for light, try moving it near a better light source, a window, under a skylight, under a good light set up. HTH!

I did a quick search for Philodendron transplanting and came up with this link there are usally much more. One thing the link did not address is you must cut back foilage, it will most likely die any way. thrips are usually not white, kinda light brown or black. but there are so-o many different kinds.. if you can make out many legs and very narrow sigar shape , it could be immature thrips.. not clear enough to see. but it looks like white fly to me. disturb them, see if they take off or 'jump' - then it is likely white fly. immature thrips are very sluggish, white fly is sluggish too, but they do 'take off'.

Most vines need some sort of support because A) most of the plant's growth goes into extending/ increasing it's length, so the trunk thickens slowly, and B) unlike trees, vines are slower to produce lignin, which is the organic polymer that makes wood woody and strong. Young Monstera's take time to split, but, bright light often hastens this procedure.
B, you answered your own question..'It is getting a much better lighting situation than the parent plant. Give the parent more light, and you'll soon see splits..But give it time, with winter approaching, most plants slow down doing much of anything..Toni

Monsters need support to split. The weight of the large leaves that start happening when the plant is mature enough to split - and the stems, NEED something to climb, or a structure to be tied to. Otherwise they just tip over, and produce smaller and smaller leaves (somewhat like a pothos or heartleaf philodendron) they want to climb.

My 2.5 yo from seed plant has DOUBLE split leaves (two splits in one section between leaf veins - we just got the first one) but each stem needs to be supported because of how heavy the stems and leaves get. The stems at this point are as thick as the lower portion of my thumb.
