Nothing to do but wait for it to green up. If you were to fertlize it now all you would do is force the weeds to grow.

For now pull the weeds by hand, and get educated on how to care for Bermuda grass, because it is exact opposite of cool season grass. Like for one learn how to mow it very short 2 to 3 times a week, and fertilize it every month after it greens up.

Bermuda grass looks soooo good when mowed at less than an inch high. Many people mow them at less than 1/4 inch high. Rotary mowers cannot do that so the real bermuda aficionados will buy a reel mower to mow as low as 1/16 inch. It really does look good and feels like a carpet underfoot. The problem with that look it you have to mow so often. If have a rotary mower and just drop the height all the way as low as it goes, that would be a relatively painless way to get close to that carpet look. Drop the mower height gradually so you don't clip off the entire grass blade.

Also, Agreed. I have a hybrid bermuda yard (princess 77). My tips for you are to wait until green-up. Cut the yard low and bag the clippings. I did this (at the recommendation of the above posters) and it is allowing the green blades more sun and they are growing quickly.

Fertilize with Pennington seed's lawn starter. It has enough nitrogen to make a green yard but also has lots of phosphorus to stimulte root growth.

I advise keeping the yard tall for photosynthesis purposes since it is a new lawn and your main goal should be growth. Water frequently at first to make sure the roots have access to the water. Then dig up a little patch to see how long the roots are. Then water long enough for the water to soak to root depth. (you might need a little area of yard to dig up to constantly check this. This will make sure your roots have water, but still condition them to dig deep down to access the water. Adjust the length of time and frequency accordingly as your roots grow longer.

When the grass is established like you want it, then start mowing at least twice a week, not taking off more than 1/3 the length of the blade each time. Each mowing should be slightly shorter than the last until it is at the height you want. 5/8 inch for a home lawn is perfect in my opinion.

Another option will be replace bermuda (yoou still have time)with Fescue/bluegrass sod.

Bermuda 419 (it might be what you have unless the builder went the cheap route and put down cheap builder bermuda sod...? check with the builder) makes a nice lawn when care for it propertly. Fertilizer every 30 days, cutting it every few days during the growing season (June, July, August and maybe September)The biggest problem is how quickly it invades your flower beds and that it's brown for most of the year.

Right now I"m down in Myrtle Beach, SC, on a business trip, and all the warm season grass here is 100% dormant. Myrtle Beach is zone 8 vs 7 for the Charlotte area.

Bermuda is a permanent decision, once rooted, forget it; it's in there forever. That might not bother you and some people, but it's important to know so you don't regreat later on.

Anyway, like the other one have said, leave the grass alone until it warms up, then you can fertilize and have some green grass.

BTW, congratulations on your new home! Charlotte is a great city to live (Love the Ballantyne area and the Downtown...)
