Something Eating my New Crab Apple Trees

We got some new collonade crab apple trees for our small yard this year. Planted new in the spring and they have been doing beautifully.

However, lately, something has been completely devouring leaves. From the eating pattern and the "poop" on the lower leaves, I would assume a caterpiller of sorts.

I have scoured the plant and cannot find any bug on them at all, but the devouring is continuing and I find new "poop" daily.

When I Googled, I saw that most of the caterpillers that like crab apples will not kill the tree, but they also seemed to be the web and tent caterpillers.

I am concerned because there are no webs or tents on the trees and since they are so young the devouring could be affecting their growth.

I did spray once with BT for caterpillers, and there seems to be less visible waste, but I am not sure.

I guess it could also be a Beetle of some sort, but I have not seen a single one on the plants.
