Some of my plants ticked away for the winter!

Yes, I can finally say they are all in for the winter, in the greenhouse. The only ones in there are a few that need a longer growing season to ripen fruit and a few select tropicals along with orchids that love high humidity!

That's amazing!!! Truly an incredible collection, really enjoyed looking at it! Not sure you left yourself room to get in there...? Wow. I just want to put my head in there and take a deep breath.

Do you think your typo in the title was a Freudian slip? Are the plants ticked off?

Hi Mike!!

Beautiful collection!! I think i see a familiar Gardenia in a few of those pics? ;-)

I also noticed the slip and i had to chuckle like Purpleinopp.. I think she nailed it!! They are "ticked" to be inside and will be so happy once spring rolls around again so they can have there space. They all look so happy though and im sure it gives you such satisfaction to rest inside the greenhouse on some of these cold nasty days. I true "escape" that is needed during the winter. This is why i want to keep my trees in my greenhouse so i can "get away" if only for a few minutess. It is very relaxing to get lost in those beutifull plants.. My "Calgon Moment.."

What Karl says has always been my experience dealing with David Austin roses. I never receive the roses before Weds. (usually more like Thursday)--which means they send them early in the week to get from Texas to St. Louis. You can either just keep them in the box or I often (on Thursday-Friday) start soaking so they can be planted on Saturday AM. They are pretty good about sending when they say they will and if you have concerns you can usually get a person on the phone easily to check for you or change weeks as needed.

Hi floodthelast, interesting user name, my heavenly blue morning glory's are climing an obliesk that I placed in the middle of the bed to support the clematis Henryi, which is also growing on it. I actually had another morning glory growing on it too, Star of India, only I was afraid that it would become too much of a tangled mess so I removed the SOI and left Henryi and the heavenly blue MGs. It actually worked out very nicely as the clematis bloomed first with a lot of white flowers and then later in the season, the heavenly blue MG bloomed with yet another flush from the clematis. Saving some under-winterized plants

It's not the cold that is killing your plants. It is dehydration. The plants are literally becoming freeze dried. VFT's, Sarrs, etc. can withstand freezing temperatures. Purpurea can be found way up north in Canada. However, when you grow these plants in pots you are not shielding the soil and root system from freezing temps as thier natural habitat does. As a result, during extended periods of below freezing temps, the entire pot freezes solid which makes the water unable to be absorbed by the roots. These plants are dormant, but they still absorb water as water escapes through thier leaves. I have many sarrs, vfts, drosera filliformis and live in Zone 5 (Indiana). What I typically do is bring my plants in my unheated insulated garage. It is typically 10-15 degrees warmer in there than outside during the winter. I only bring my plants out during days that it is above 30. What I would suggest is trying to find some way to keep the plants above freezing (30s-40s). If you do not have access to an unheated garage or attic (next to a sunlit window if possible) then another method would be to but the plants in a large container and put mulch over them. Pine bark, leaves, pine needles or something to that effect. This will shield the plants from arctic blasts and keep moisture from escaping too quickly. Hello everyone and thanks for your compliments about these tiny bits and pieces of plants! Actually the plants have been saved from my daughter's negligence, except for the kalanchoe and azalea - which I bought from HD. My daughter (and her husband, too) doesn't know how to plant but they do like flowers and plants, so when they moved into this house two years ago, they stocked their backyard/patio with many pot plants. Unfortunary, many could not survive survive her inappropriate treatment! When we arrived last October I rescued whatever plants I could, including 3 geraniums, one azalea, some dahlias, some dianthus, an ivy topiary (spelling?)and something else I don't know the names of. I also tried to root some cuttings of cacti and succulents. Then when Edna came for dinner last time, she brought me an amarylis (very nice of her!). I also bought myself 3 african violets (I always have violets back in 'Nam), but one is dying (Edna said they don't like gas heater, which unfortunately is what we have here!). So, all of those constitute my garden away from home and I have been worrying so much to keep them alive through winter! I'll be here until after the New Year and will go back in mid-January. I hope my daughter will be able to take care of the plants after I leave, though. BTW, we have a pet - Emmy - who is sooooo smart. Here's a photo of her watching the National Championship Dog Show on TV. Isn't she cute, folks? Thank you for letting me 'talk' so much. Really have little to do in this weather! Xuan

I know I am.....although our weather here has been mild, but I hear cold is on the way....at this time of the year I start thinking spring...;)

How do you manage to do that, Mike!? How can you keep all those lovelies out there and not worry so much about the changing temperatures? What kind of heat source do you use?

i got 3 on sale from Lowes recently (not-in-bloom), and just dug out an old copy of Simon & Schusters guide to Orchids,, about the only 'flowering' plant thats interests me (so far),,,

man, makes me wanna come camp out in there hehe

I just came back to drool some more! :-) I love seeing Mike's plant collection and some of the more interesting types he has! And they all look so healthy and beautiful... gosh, I sure wish I had a heated greenhouse... but I couldn't imagine what it would cost to heat the one we have. I only use it in spring and summer.
