Pleased with 1st year Caroline raspberry

Michael

For those interested in Caroline raspberry, I planted a dozen plants this spring and 11 made it. My experience with Latham and Heritage, planted over 5 years ago, was different than with Caroline in that Heritage didn't fruit at all in it's planting year and both Heritage and Latham took 2 more years to get going well. This year, all the Caroline plants have set a considerable amount of large fruit and are continuing to do so on canes about 2 ft. tall. Expecting taller canes and no fruit, my 1st trellis wire is about 2' off the ground so only a few canes are getting the benefit of the wires which they need with the heavy fruit hanging on them.

Overall, I am delighted with Caroline in it's first year. The one cane that didn't make it was the worst looking one of the bunch and I would have been suprised if it survived.

For what it is worth, I'm in north-central KS.
