Order from Nourse. They specialize in raspberries and they are considered by many to be one of the, if not THE, best places to buy raspberries... And, they're not too far from you. I've bought quite a few from them.
Recommendations:
Anne - Not very productive, but very large yellow berries which are probably the best I've ever tasted. You could go with KiwiGold here too, but I don't believe Nourse carries it.
Caroline - Probably the sweetest red.
Summer - Go with Prelude... it's a bit of a hybrid between the summer and everbearer. It acts like a summer berry, but still gives you berries the first year. Thorns are pretty bad though.

I am pleased that you recommended some that are on my list.

I was thinking:

2x Anne
2x Royalty
3x Caroline
and 3x something summer-bearing like Nova or Souris. Any thoughts on those? I will look at Prelude. I can get all the others locally and separate out the canes, it turns out, they've only been potted since last week, 2 or 3 to a pot :)

One other question... I was planning a simple T-trellis for this row of both everbearing and summer. Will it be OK to trellis them both the same way, as long as I remember which are everbearing when it's pruning time?

I am growing Royalty, but this is the first year that it will give me fruit, so I really can't comment on it yet. Haven't tried Nova or Souris.
Yep, growing both the everbearer and summerbearer on the same trellis should be fine.
Make sure you have a physical barrier between the rows. Otherwise, within 2 years, the raspberries will intermingle. By year 4, the more dominant varieties will have out-competed the weaker varieties. In the end, you'll loose varieties and pruning options. You need to go very deep to separate the varieties. Some say even 12" isn't enough, but it's worked for me.

I'll second the Nourse recommendation. I ordered 10 Caroline plants from them last year in May and actually got a few berries in the fall. One of the plants didn't make it, but it doesn't really matter, because now there are dozens of canes coming up!

On Royalty: is it considered a black raspberry in the sense that it shouldn't be planted in range of the reds??? My nurseryman wasn't sure since it's a cross!

The whole blacks causing diseases with reds thing is a bit of a myth. I've got my blacks right next to my reds and don't have any problems. It is more if you have wild raspberries.

The thing you do want to watch for is separation. I planted Anne in the same row with Heritage, and the Heritage moved over and out-competed Anne. I've only got a few Anne's now that are struggling to find space.

I'll also recommend ordering from Nourse. Their plants are bigger and better cared for than from any nursery that I've seen.

My local nursery had just potted theirs up and I chose the beefiest fattest canes, so I hope they will be OK... I got:
2 canes Anne
3 canes Caroline
---
3 canes Souris (like Bourne but "improved"?)
2 canes Royalty purple

As far as separation, both between the summer-bearing end of the row and everbearing, and potentially also between varieties, what is good to use? I assume we're talking about a physical barrier in the earth. perhaps like a 12" deep x bed-width piece of plywood or heavy plastic? Any ideas?

Sorry to hear they were out. You're on the right track with plastic or plywood... you just need to make sure the roots can't go around such a barrier. It's not an easy task. In my case, I just mow the grass between the beds, but so far this year they've tunneled 3 feet away from their beds, and I suspect that will be even more next year. -Glenn

I have ordered the majority that I have from nourse, but have also used Indiana Berry Company with very good results. I think they have some in stock. Good luck!

I've been growing Royalty for the past 10 years at least, and I think they are great. I use mine mostly in jam, they freeze very well. This year I ordered a few Preuldes, just to try out a red variety and see if I'm missing anything.

Hey does anyone have recommended varieties for zone 9a?

Dorman red raspberry or Baba raspberry.

One can find dorman raspberries in lots of farms but the Baba raspberries are a little harder to find.
