Mow brown grass real short before new grass grows in spring?

My blue grass/fescue lawn is currently dormant, so all that's above the soil is brown blades and leaf bits leftover from winter. Before the grass breaks dormancy and sends up new green shoots in spring, I want to mow what's currently there down to 1-2 inches. I'm thinking that doing this will let the sun in to warm the ground, helping the green-up process, and shred the brown blades/leaf bits into a thinner layer that will decompose faster once the weather warms. Is this an accepted practice in lawn care? Are there any concerns/issues that I should consider first?

As background info, our lawn is maintained organically with topdressings of compost in spring and fall, corn gluten meal and alfalfa meal throughout the year, and lots of leaves mulch-mowed in the fall.

Thanks,
