Excuse me, I haven't introduced myself

Hi all. I've already posted a few times and realized I haven't introduced myself yet. I recently have acquired my parents home and huge yard here in Texas. I made my first trip to the big April/October Warrenton antique weekend this April. Actually I went three days and didn't even get to Round Top or any of the other towns. Anyway, that is where I learned all about what you can do in your yard besides plant flowers and shrubs. Oh my gosh, it's like a whole new world. I thought totally gutting the house was fun, you know, creating a clean slate? But garden junking is like the greatest excitement. Everything I see I wonder if I can use it without getting too carried away. I am going to an estate sale this Saturday and can't wait to see what treasures I can find. I can't wait to turn that old satellite dish into a gazebo. Well anyway, thanks for all the pictures of your wonderful gardens. I hope to have a few of my yard in the future.

Yes,GJ is very addictive and everyone has such great ideas as well. Plus, just the fact that they are all just so doggone nice, too! blessings-sherri

Nice to meet you sherri. I don't think you would meet anyone mean who gardened, especially the creative garden junk type. It's too calming and exciting at the same time. I don't know why some folks over indulge in alcohol or drugs for that matter. I get such a thrill when I bid on items at an auction. I don't even have to win. If I think of a neat new way to recycle an old thing, I feel so accomplished. I've gotten so many ideas from this place and I hope I can share something new, or at least a different twist on an idea from here. Thanks for the greeting, Kathy

Frank, hopefully I'll have some photos of our bulb garden to share this spring... wait until you see the Daffodils and Tulips I've got! I've also got quite an assortment of Iris and Daylilies! Tough and hardy, resistant to most problems, and beautiful... quite the bang for the buck! You could easily get lost if you begin collecting Iris and Daylilies! Have you seen the price tags on some? Wow! Theresa, remind me after the weather breaks... I have a horrible memory... and I'll be happy to put together a care package for you! I don't have a name for the red/orange Daylily, but since my brother gave me the original, I call it "Tim's Daylily". It's really beautiful, and it flowers all summer for me. It grows to be a manageable clump, and I've had good luck pollinating it. I have others, too. Tim's Daylily... Double Orange... Daffodils... Mom's Iris... Just a little taste for Frank, and to show Theresa what those Daylilies look like! Somewhere around page 30 is where the summer flowers are located... Welcome aboard, Karen! You'll find most CFers to be friendly and have spirited discussions, with lots of opinions but very few flames or trolls. There are a few taboo topics which can never be resolved, such as the presence of flour and sugar in cornbread, but even such discussions are generally pleasant...which leads me, indirectly, to my story of a huge culinary disaster. Christmas dinner some years ago...had a dozen or so guests, gonna make a nice rib roast. As a side dish, some cornbread dressing... so I'm making a big batch of cornbread to make the dressing. A quadruple batch, in fact, in a big 14x17 pan, batter filling it nearly to the rim. Oven preheated to a sizzling 450. I open the oven and pull out the oven rack, and place the heavy batter-filled pan on the oven rack. Unfortunately, the oven rack had not been placed properly before I pulled it out, and the little hook on the far end of the rack was not engaged, so when the heavy pan was placed on one end of the rack, the other end reacted to the laws of physics, turning the whole setup into a see-saw. The batter pan not only fell, but it flipped open side down onto the interior of the HOT oven door. Batter sizzled then scorched in place. Wet batter oozed off the sides of the door and onto the floor. So about an hour and a half before I'm to serve dinner to my guests, I have no cornbread to make dressing with, and a humongous mess to clean up on the floor and in my oven. One of my favorite lines from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: Clark:"Dad, how did you make it through all these Christmases?" Dad: "I had a lot of help from a pal named Jack Daniels." Just so.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Two of our cats (1 was a stray who was pg and we kept one of her kittens)are outdoor cats so they stay home. They have a cat door into what was my shop and I have someone who comes by almost daily to check on them. The other cat, also a stray is not very people oriented. Since she has been rving she is getting a bit more mellow. Aside from DH and myself she usually is a black streak when someone comes. (out through the doggy door) She loves to get up on the dash and watch people walk by in the motor home. Then when I gets dark she wants to go out for a walk with the dogs. (all on a leash) I don't make beautiful ornaments like Jenni. Her work is fabulous. Currently I am making welcome signs to be framed for my sister and our 3 kids. One with a gingerbread couple, one santa and sleigh, one with snowmen and one with a penguin. Also doing towels with snowflakes made out of the recipients name. They are kind of cool. Decorating a couple of sweatshirts and a T-shirt for my sister and a chenille vest for my sister. Of course, these last things aren't embroidered. Also decorating candy bars with hats and scarves to look like snowmen for the GK. (Saw them on the craft forum) Speaking of GK I forgot to mention oldest DD has 3 stepchildren, 1 who we consider to be a GS. Long story short....their father has custody of him and doesn't see the other 2. We do love the dino center and the people who work there. We stopped by for 3 days last year to visit with everyone. I never thought for a second I would love sitting for 8 hours a day hunched over a bone wearing a mask, ear plugs and goggles removing the matrix (rock) away with air scribes (like mini jackhammers) I was given a Camarasaurus foot to work on....it took me over 5 40 hour weeks to clean. It was then displayed in the museum with a placque that said it had been prepped by me. That was really cool!!!! We have been to the Museum of the Rockies in Montana a couple of times. My GP lived in St. Pete. I lived there until I was 5... when we moved to Wa. I have cousins in the Brooksville area and in the north around DeFuniak Springs. I probably won't get to ornaments until after Christmas but I will be ahead of the game for next year, LOL.... I know they won't be as nice as yours Jenni but if I don't show them pics of yours, no one will know. hehehe I will post a pic when I do get done. I feel like I know so many of you. JoanMn emailed me when BonnyGranny passed away. I was halfway to HongKong on DH ship at the time. I am so glad to see how well Griff is doing. Sorry if this got too long. Hi Denise and Kim, Thanks for helping me feel welcome. I've been lurking here a while so while I'm new to you, I feel like I know you already. :-) I guess sooner or later I'm not going to be home to cover them up if it rains and I've been watering them all spring with rain water exclusively. I catch it in buckets and keep it inside for the Hoyas. My growing mix is pretty chunky too. I use Better-Gro special orchid mix with cactus soil, perlite and crunched up hydrotone balls. It drains quickly for me. If I get a new plant from a good grower I leave it in whatever they've sent me if it looks right to me. When I got home tonight and there was a note from the post office inside my door saying there's a parcel waiting for me. The only thing I'm expecting is my order from Epiphytica. I hope that's what is waiting for me!

Welcome Kathyjb, you are gonna love it on here! If you are like most of us, you will spend hours looking at old posts and just getting so excited over all the neat ideas on here!

How exciting for you to have a nice big yard to "play" in, will look forward to seeing any pics you post.

Welcome fellow lurker! Now the games begin. And all these wonderful people make you feel as though you are a friend immediately. Their ideas will just blow you away after spending "days" looking at all their pics and ideas! I REALLY envy the ones that are lucky enough to be able to curb shop in their towns. But my TS's and yard sales keep me going. Hope to see pics soon!

And a big welcome from me, too. I'm fairly new here and love this site!! We moved into a new home here in western Washington in October, so we have a whole new yard to landscape if it ever quits raining. We've gotten to the age where we want easy maintenance, so we plan to use lots of gravel and wood chips. For that reason I started searching the web for interesting stuff to make it attractive and found this site. WOW!

From one Kathy to another, welcome to a wonderful group. Like so many, I stumbled across Garden Junk while looking up something on the web. I started looking at the posts and pictures and decided I found folks after my own heart! I'm sure you feel the same. And it doesn't hurt that they are all kind, creative and inspiring too!

Hey to all. Tanya, going to Warrenton this April was my first time ever to go. I had been hearing about it for years, but by the time I heard about it, it was over. Well this time I marked my calendar and went. Great exercise. When I would tell a merchant it was my first time they would ask, "have you been to Marburger?" I'd say no, can't afford to even get in the gate. There is a July 4th sale in Carmine I think. Some kind of auction I want to go to. Actually it's the Saturday after July 4th. Neat stuff.
