Christmas Cactus Pruning/Repotting Questions
Comments (2)Yes to both questions. I prune the foliage regularly, and I prune the roots when re-potting. CC's will often make many new branches from a single cut. Judicious pruning will get your CC bushy in one season. Low but consistent doses of fertilizer really helps, too. I would ditch the self-watering container. These plants appreciate a fast-draining mix of bark, with a bit of Perlite and a pinch of AV soil or Orchid Mix as an afterthought. Here's a Thread I put together when I re-potted my Christmas Cactus this Autumn: Christmas Cactus re-potted Josh This post was edited by greenman28 on Sun, Jan 6, 13 at 20:04...See MorePlease help my Christmas Cactus!
Comments (22)HMMM, well, I am almost disappointed. Of course, the variety you named, I believe makes it a parent of a true Christmas Cactus. I thought for sure it was one from pictures and descriptions I had seen. Totally not upright in its growth, etc. Oh well, none the less, I do think it has been around for some time and it is pretty big. Plus it did bloom at Christmas through the first couple weeks of January. So, I am not going to tell it any different!!! I am going to give the re-potting a whirl this weekend and will keep my fingers crossed that I do not break much. Thanks for the details on what to do. Lastly, since it does hang down so much, and it looks pretty silly with it staked up like I have done. Do you use any of those florist type wire rings, or something like that for support? (Like a very small tomato cage that would follow the edge of the pot?) Thanks to everyone for the help and the ideas of how to treat my very pretty cactus. I can't wait to try my hand at getting it to bloom this Christmas. Hazel...See MoreJade Re-Pot 2 Months After Re-Pot?
Comments (1)Howdy! Yes, you can re-pot into a fast-draining soil! This time of year is excellent for pinching, pruning, re-potting, et cetera. Since you know to refrain from watering, I don't think a re-potting would pose much of a risk at all. Besides, Nelson will be much healthier through the winter if re-potted now. What ingredients do you have available? Josh...See MorePotting-UP a Christmas Cactus
Comments (1)Hi Joel, My question would be why? Since you say it's doing well as is, why mess w it? What is it you would hope to gain from this? Doubling capacity is an ENORMOUS amount to increase at once & basically (IMO) would double the risk of root rot. Such a large soil volume would likely stay wet too long & increase the vulnerability of root rot considerably. Broadly speaking in terms of C&S, suggested practice is to increase pot size just one or 2 sizes at a time (at most). Of course, a pix, would help the thread along....See Moreelichka
