Comments (1)The dropping are likely some kind of caterpillar. Look for something to squash or spray. The growth pattern you describe sounds normal for a persimmon, especially a young one. They grow first thing in spring and then often nothing else all summer. Lots of water and fertilizer is the only hope of lots of growth. Pushing lots of growth is OK for a young tree but probably not a bearing tree. You get better fruit on a medium vigor mature tree....See MoreUsing leaves on a persimmon tree as a guide to picking the fruit?
Comments (11)I'm with denni & fruitnut. Loss of leaves has nothing to do with it. Translucent appearance and softening are prime indicators. Usually, if they're dropping off, they're ripe, but every variety differs. I don't have NG bearing yet, but its hybrid parent, Rosseyanka, holds its fruit on the tree well into December here - and must either be snipped off or pulled free from the calyx. Currently, the tree is bare of leaves, and the fruits are yellow-orange, but still firm - and probably astringent; however, I've sampled Rosseyanka fruits that were picked at this stage, peeled, sliced, and dried, and they are marvelous, with no astringency remaining. I'll usually let those hang on the tree until they're soft and translucent, or we're due for a good hard freeze, then pull them off and freeze them for consumption as persimmon-sicles throughout the winter....See MorePersimmon dropping fruits and leaves browning
Comments (1)Mulch well around the base of the tree. Use your finger to check the soil near the trunk. If it feel dry then you need to water it more often. Tony...See Morepaleopaque
