Caliber Appliances, LETS TALK ABOUT IT!
Comments (1)WHELP - I did it! Caliber Range is officially on order. A number of things contributed to the decision < https://alisonkenthomekitchen.com/2020/12/05/kitchen-design-appliance-decisions-the-caliber-range/ > but in short, the high BTU french top avail in 36", the extra depth (all my Kitchens have 30" deep counters), the style and the customizations. I'll circle back around once I've had it a few months!...See MoreLet’s talk about funeral homes!
Comments (47)My mother had purchased her interment site decades ago - in her hometown, where she hadn't lived for the decades since. She had also picked out a dress to be buried in, and had shown it to me several times in the years before her final illness. She was in a nursing home in my town, 115 miles away, with hospice. The nursing home (or hospice, I don't recall which) arranged for her remains to be picked up by a local mortuary after death was declared. I arranged the funeral with the funeral home in her hometown, that had been used by my family many times. They arranged to have the body transported to them, handled all of the paperwork (including obtaining the death certificate from my county), and placed the obit that I wrote in the local paper. 3 of my 4 siblings, my aunt and her best friend, and 2 of 5 my nieces came to the small service that we had in a parlor of the funeral home. There was no one else who knew or were friends with her (and I had no friends that I had remained in contact with) left in town. My niece's husband (they lived locally) arranged for the chaplain from his work to give a little homily and lead prayer; I found a musician to play 3-4 of her favorite hymns on guitar. Then all we went to the interment at the cemetery. One of my SILs arranged with someone she knew to prepare and serve a casual lunch in a facility at the cemetery for us. BTW, that was the only family member who did anything - the others never even offered - to arrange or help pay for it all. Mom didn't have any insurance benefit or funds left to help pay. ETA: I did all this really out of respect for my elderly aunt - that it pleased my sister and 2 of her daughters was nice but really not a consideration. My brothers wouldn't have minded either way, but I was glad that the oldest drove up from Tennessee - I hadn't seen him in many years, and probably never will again - I was 7 when he left home at the age of 18 and we were never close as adults. At the time it was rather a stretch for my finances. So, I did negotiate with the funeral home about the charges; in fact, I declined their caskets and found a company that sold and delivered lovely caskets in Cincinnati at a much lower cost....See MoreLet's talk about David Austin's Dannahue
Comments (71)@Sharon z8b Texas A rather red face here too! No, I am not a professional writer, having just retired last year at 72 as a Clinical Instructor/Lecturer at a UK University. I have a manuscript of a book I wrote some 25 years ago on the historical and scientific aspects of Rose Oil (Old Rose Damask Fragrance primarily, entitled "The World of Attar of Rose") - which I was very proud of at the time, several years in the making. Kew Gardens and friend, the eminent rosarian Graham Thomas, both had copies and tried to find a publisher, but to no avail. I was then asked to rewrite the script as a coffee-table-browsing book, rather than an investigative scientific dissertation, though it was definitely lyrical and a fairly easy read IMHO. I declined, as other aspects of my life took over at the time. Closer to Houz'z home, I did make a significant contribtion to the discussion "Let's talk about the 'Myrrh' scent of David Austin Roses" which might be of interest. (page 6 of 'Explore Discussions', Roses). We've been fobbed off with the notion that DA English Roses introduced the "Myrrh" scent profile into their creations for far too long - this romantic fragrance feature has been applied and perpetuated since the introduction of Constance Spry in 1961. The scent in fact is authentic anise, or sweet licorice, as identified in the aromatic profile of the herb Sweet Cicely (Myrrhis odorata) which inhabits the roadways and ditches of northern UK. So not very romantic then! It has nothing to do with the bitter resin aroma of the genuine article, the sap which exudes from the damaged bark of Commiphora Myrrha of exotic faraway lands. The term "Garden Myrrh" tells us what the scent profile is more accurately I would venture - and the company has got away with it because so few of us have been privileged to inhale the real McCoy. The language "Myrrh of Gardens" would never sell roses, would it? 'Dannahue' update. The bowl of petals holds out for one day or two, then disintegrates like The Generous Gardener. So not good at all for picking. Hopefully a more mature bush will have many flowers to open in succession to compensate for the confetti of petals covering the ground. Time will tell....See MoreLet's talk about the Weather in the colder zones-2-3-4.
Comments (66)Here in New England, we had beautiful weather for the past two days, but above normal temperatures. They forecast a high of 53F which is about average and I ended up with 60F on both days. So now, I'm concerned that we are going to skip over spring again and right into a HOT dry summer. Now they are forecasting another round of "showers" and a big downpour on Friday with wind. My garden is loving all this rain. I am just fortunate that our neighborhood and this property for some reason, handles extra rain. We have a lot of mature trees in a small area and I assume the roots absorb it. Our entire neighborhood is flat level land and streets, maybe that has something to do with it. Anyway - still - the weather has become more unpredictiable and way more stormy here. And what is with all the wind? Last year we had a lot of "showers" in the forecast which often meant, days of cloudy weather with no rain. I had trouble getting plants to bloom in less sun. And has anyone else noticed that weather people are having a hard time forecasting the weather? They will give a 5 day forecast and whatever they forecast for that 5th day, by the time it gets here, the weather pattern is just the opposite of the forecast they gave 5 days ago. Is it really a forecast if you have to wait for the day before for it to be accurate? Something seems to have shifted....See Moretcgardener Zone 10a SE Florida
