Well, you're certainly right about "hard to find". Tatiana's says about it: 70-80 days, indet., regular leaf, 4-8 oz red fruit. Nice flavour, no BER, few splits. Doesn't like heat. 8 lbs/plant. Gill's All-Purpose is a determinate or semi-determinate descendant of Wasatch Beauty, depending on whose description you believe. For a similar indeterminate tomato, you might try Rutgers or Thessaloniki. But of course there are many other choices. Victory Seed has several historic commercial tomato varieties you could try to see which comes closest to the one she remembers. Here is a link that might be useful: Gill's All-Purpose

From Oregon State University (SP 50-694 Preserving Asian Pears updated February 2013): All home-canned Asian pears must be acidified to prevent growth of the bacteria which cause botulism food poisoning. Adding lemon juice before canning will bring the acidity of lower acid varieties into the safe range. They then may be safely canned using procedures for other types of pears. (Italics are mine). OSU lists the same acidification directions as for tomatoes (Asian pears are listed as a pH of 4.7 so just over the line): Add 1 Tablespoon bottled lemon juice per pint jar (2 Tablespoons per quart). Many pear recipes already include lemon juice, but an extra bit of citric acid might not be a bad idea, if you don't object to the tartness, and it wouldn't add any extra "lemon" flavor. Normal amounts would be 1/4 teaspoon citric acid per pint; 1/2 teaspoon per quart. Most recipes are also loaded with sugar, which minimizes the tart factor.

I know he needs to start seeds very soon as these habaneros seem to take much longer than everything else to germinate. Habbob, he's mainly looking for colouration and flavour variety, but not necessarily the world's hottest pepper, lol. I don't think he'd rule it out, but I also don't think it's his holy grail either. The chocolate habanero was one he was very keen for. We've got a couple of heating mats to help with germination, but we're still working on obtaining the shop lights. We've got a metal rack that could support 3' shop lights, but it seems like the 4' ones are more standard. I know they exist, it's just a matter of finding them.
