My First! A Cobalt Blue Totem/Bird Bath!

Hi everyone! I shared on the garden junk chat the other night that I was making my first totem! Turned out to be a cobalt blue totem/bird bath! (It's 30 inches tall.) I used 8 pieces of garage sale/thrift store glass. I've been collecting pieces for it for over 3 years. I found the big plate on top at a Mennonite Auction garage sale in the fall for 50 cents!

Carol and I found 2 cobalt blue love birds which I will attach to the center of the top. I'll take a picture when they arrive and I attach them. I really like Sandy's (use2bcapecodr) idea of attaching a big plate on the bottom to bury in the ground so it won't tip. THANK YOU, SANDY! Anyways, wanted to share a FUN project! I LOVE COBALT BLUE! Kirk ... That is just BEAUTIFUL! Love your glass choices and the cobalt blue! I also took Sandy's advice and added a microwave plate to the bottom of my green birdbath/fdr totem.

Is your totem going in your gardens? Mine is on the porch for right now...we've got "winter weather" here again...ugh! 3 yrs. of collecting the glass was worth it...great work! Jeanne S.

Ok Kirk, so I was out today at a Flea Market and ran into Nathans 2nd grade teacher. She was a vendor at the flea market and had various collectables on her table. Two jumped out at me--a rainbow cobalt bird and a red cardinal bird---both glass and signed. I got them each for $2 (what a deal, huh?). So I did a search for them since one had a sticker saying it was from Terra Studios. Well, each one is worth about $10 each. I STILL will use them in totems for sure....because that's what I do. Then I remembered your birdbath birds and searched on Terra Studios website and found your exact birds there. So, I don't know how much you paid, hopefully less than from the studio itself. Welcome & nice birdbath. It is about height of mine I think & I looked out 1 day to see a very large neighborhood cat sipping away. He was so cute I ran & got my camera don't know if I still have the pic or not but he looked my way after I got it & kept sipping. Mine is glass with stained glass inside of it with a metal rim. Grout is kind of gray rubbery stuff. It's a hummingbird getting nectar out of flowers I think, just cleaned it tonight would think I would remember. Anyway as I mentioned on another post gift for getting "Birds & Bloom" magazine several years ago. I would go with a large flat rock that takes up about 1/3 of top & drop in large copper fitting 1 1/2 in. x 3/4 in. to help keep slimyness down. I would have a hard time cleaning it with gravel in it. Too gross for me! I keep scrub brush outside near the birdbath! Jan

Good work!The blue totem is awesome. Isn't this the best site ever? I haven't been here very long either,and you are already better at the pics than me. Your right it is addicting, in one month I've made 14 totems, 3 bottle bugs, and a plate flower and my lunches are consumed with searching thrift stores. Look foward to more pics. Syble

Blue is Beautiful. Great Piece. It will also elligantly help a lot Raccoons wash their hands, LOL. You might consider a concrete step stone to anchor yours if you have thirsty squirrels and assort. furry friends. Susie

Kirk,

That is really a cool birdbath!!!! Ok now make sure that there is something in there so the birds have something to grip with their feet. Make sure no other critters get in it and break that beautiful piece of art! And bring it in in the winter too! :-)

AWESOME! Hard to believe that is your first totem! You sure started off with one very gorgeous creation! Looks like you have the 'eye' for putting together just the perfect pieces. And of course, cobalt is my favorite too.
