leaning ficus benjamina

I have a 6-foot tall ficus benjamina that has leaned to one side since I inherited it from my mother about 4 years ago. I'm not sure if it leaned when she had it, or if the stem got broken during transport to my house. We tied it to a wooden dowel for support, but recently removed the dowel to see if the tree had grown strong enough to support itself (it hadn't). Is there a way to strengthen the stem? It has been repotted once about 3 years ago.
