Best time to buy fruiting plants?

Specifically mulberry trees, really. My dad randomly reminisced about the mulberries he ate off of trees in his childhood and asked me to find him one. I think I've decided to go with the Gerardi Dwarf as he has a small yard in the city, although I would get him an Asian mulberry but I read they were invasive in N. America. Anyway, Whitman Farms seems to be the only source available at the time but I am hesitant.

Here's where the question adheres to all fruiting plants: As an example, I know that mulberry trees are generally offered in the Spring, as many places say they are out for the season and to wait til next year. So does that mean that if I order now I'm probably going to get a skinny and sickly picked over plant that no one wanted? Would it be wiser in general to purchase fruiting plants when their seasons begin, or would it be safe for me to just jump and hope that such a reputable company would never send me a sub-par plant? Has anyone had bad experiences taking the risk?

Thanks in advance for your input!
