Best time of year to air layer fruit trees?

Hello,

I am in Zone 10 - San Diego and would like to know when I can air layer my Fuji apple tree? Would this time of year be okay when the tree is still flowering/fruiting?

I would also like to do it to my Pakistan Mulberry tree and Persimon tree. Any advice would be helpful since this is my first time doing any propagation of fruit trees. So far, I have watched you-tube videos to learn.

This is a late comment, when air-layering bear in mind that sometimes it takes the air-layered plant over a year to form adequate roots, so the time that you start the process is really non-critical. The only exception being if you are in an area where the air-layer might freeze, or become excessively dry. But since you are in zone 10, you shouldn't have to worry about the freezing part, and if you keep the air-layer moist, (but not soaking wet), it should be successful. The only other thing to keep in mind is that some plants do not air-layer well. Plants with fleshy roots, (pawpaw for example)

No need for a node. Tissues in cambium will dedifferentiate and then redifferentiate to form adventicious buds. It just takes a little longer. There's probably no reason to go through the effort of layering unless you want to. The plant comes easily from cuttings. Early spring is not a good time to layer this plant, btw. It is at it's lowest energy point of the growth cycle & will be pressed hard to make roots. I would have waited until the tree has gained some stored energy and layered it come mid June. Tonytran, the execution of the air layering is perfect. But from my point of serious sight better instead of making an air layering, to graft on the most appropriate rootstock (depending on terrain), if it is a land with very moist soils, it is best to use Diospyros virginiana, and for the driest land Diospyros Lotus is better . In your case with air layering, what you get will be a variety with a rootstock Diospyros kaki ( and no one knows how it will behave in different types of terrain) , although usually performs well. There is a boy from San Diego, who has problems with his kakis grafted in Diospyros Lotus (usually this rootstock has problems in humid lands, as this rootstock has a very shallow root system, only deepens in the land , about 40-50 centimeters ) while the Diospyros virginiana has a very deep root system (this rootstock is more resistant to soil moisture and provide to the grafted variety increased resistance to fungal diseases), next February , I will send some seeds of this rootstock. The difference between the two rootstock is like night and day. It seems that the rootstock Diospyros virginiana, is not widely used in the United States is this true? Best regards Jose

Hey, when is the best time to air layer maples like the Sugar Maple? Last weekend I air layered a branch on a Sugar Maple that is in my Aun'ts yard. I thought maybe when the cloraphyl in the leaves start to move down to the roots as they change colors sinces it approaching fall will be trapped in the layer and develop new roots. I did the gurdle method where you cut off a ring of bark from the branch and you coat it with some rooting hormone. Well I haven't wrapped it yet and just left the wound open to air with rooting hormone on it. I'm going to cover it with a plastic pop bottle with regular miracle grow potting soil in it. Is fall a good time to air layer a Sugar Maple or should I have waited until spring? How do I keep this air layer from freezing on the tree this winter? I live in northern Missouri which is zone 5 and it sometimes gets pretty cold here. Please let me know. Thanks.
