Didn't need a new spider but bought it anyway!

I saw this spider at Home Depot the other day and automatically bought it.Don't really have the room but, you know how that goes.

The price was really low, only $5.97!

It's a nice full 8" hanging basket (heavy) with a bunch of small babies on long stems. This could be what they call an "impulse buy".

I don't know if you can see it very well or not, but there is what looks like a viney looking plant (maybe an outdoor plant) that's growing out of the spider pot near the front/ bottom. The leaves are green spear shaped. Anyone have a guess to what it might be?

I want to say chenille plant, not sure of taxon. Does it have fuzzy leaves?

That's a lovely spider, I bought a reverse variegated one recently, it was on mark down to $10. A nice full 12 in pot, with no spider mites! Just a few black stems. I just cut those off and it's enjoying the summer out on the porch behind the shade cloth. I searched for two days for a plant with babies. HD didn't have any nice looking plants, neither did OSH. So I headed to the HP markdown at another local nursery and lucked out!

I think that's an accurate assessment. I have German and Japanese cameras and lenses. Both countries excel in their manufacture as they do their automobiles and other scientific products. These are not third world countries at all and their employees make a decent salary and have better benefits than we do, actually. I make no excuses for buying Italian pasta products, olive oils, Indian tea, Columbian coffee, or Mexican cocoas and vanillas. I get my stashes of curries from a British importer as well. I don't have a problem at all with imports from a society whose people expect to consume safe and quality products themselves. But Japanese cars and some German cars, one really couldn't call imports. They move their "export" operations to our country and employ our people and pay them a salary as good as, or usually better than they'd have with an American Company. A kink in our world trade at this point with China is that they do not allow "inspection" from outside purchasers. We are supposed to take their word for it that the products are what they are supposed to be and safe. The track records for safety are pretty evident as plastic has found its way into food supplies and lead into toys. There is also a pretty complicated (too long to go into explanations here) issue with currency rates between China and the rest of the world. IOW the playing fields are not level. You will also find that some of our natural resources are at risk now from policies of poor (or self, or no) inspection before crossing borders. One of the newer plagues arriving from Asia in their produced materials is the Emerald Ash borer. It very well may decimate our Eastern forests, affecting our timber and wood product industries to the tune of billions. There is a very large difference between trade isolationism and setting standards for equitable and safe trade. You can take it to the bank other countries have safeguards intact to protect their own working economies and farmers, but when we even think about doing it, the world calls a foul. I hope eventually this giant country evolves into the kind of trade partner who can benefit the world and its own people. But, I still think given it's social and political background of the last half century we should not expect an instant conversion to capitalism to be an overnight success, and let down our guards entirely. Didn't they execture one of their trade ministers for a putting their name in scandal not too long ago? Doesn't that bother anybody? The secrecy issue bothers me the most. As a business person, my files are an open book to many agencies and I am subject to inspections to insure to my government I operate in a safe manner and things are what I say they are. The kind of policies we have with this country puts them over every American producer who have to play by the rules. Expensive rules, btw.

flora_uk, I can still see ungerminated seeds delightedinco, I tried the Scotts EZ Seed too - it sometimes worked, and it's very convenient to use (I like the built-in spreader on the smaller containers - the gardening newbies this product is aimed at are not going to own seed spreaders or roto-tillers, don't know what kind of soil or fertilizer to use, and have no idea what 5 lbs. per 400 feet looks like when spread. But it is so expensive for what you get). I bought it only because Scotts used to have $5-off discounts on it. Pennington has a similar product as part of their Smart Seed line that's a bit cheaper (but not much), although I wonder why they claim much longer germination times than the Scotts product. There's also Scotts Patch Master which is cheaper and I haven't used yet. I think I'm going to try just regular seed, and watering more often (a real pain here - there's no outside garden hose faucets, so I either need to use big watering buckets or run a hose from an indoor faucet. I have a 50' coiled garden hose with a sink-faucet adapter at one end and a trigger sprayer at the other for that purpose). I have a bag of Vigoro Starter Fertilizer 20-27-5, and have applied quite a bit of new seeding soil (of several varieties depending on location) since the ground is mostly hard clay. I did my best to loosen it with a metal gardening rake before adding a new layer of topsoil. Any recommendations as to what type of grass I should use? I'm near Washington DC, which means both humid 100Â°F+ in the summer and subfreezing icy winters. The big-box stores around here seem to favor tall fescoe, which is also what the combination seed/mulch/fertilizer products use in this market. I like the bright green color, how fast it grows, and its tolerance for all sorts of bad weather, but not the thin straight grass blades that get matted down like cheap carpeting when walked on. The second most popular here seems to be the generically-labeled "sun and shade mix". The real nurseries have more variety to choose from but also higher prices. I don't want anything that goes dormant or turns yellow or brown in the winter. The side yard is in heavy shade due to closely-spaced houses and lots of old trees, but the backyard (which I'm more concerned about since that's the main socializing area) gets alot of sunlight. I also hear some people say I shouldn't even try to grow from seed during the hot summer. But I'd like to have a lawn by fall if possible, when I plan to have a new renter. I could plant sod - but it's inconvenient given how thirsty the stuff is when new (given the water situation I mentioned earlier) and hard to transport for someone with a small car and a bad back. Any ideas?

My new Ostrich fern didn't make it through winter

I doubt very much that your fern is dead from a short freeze. They are very hardy even in my cold wet clay in Michigan. My ostrich ferns (tag when planted in 2003 said they were Matteuccia struthiopteris or M. pennsylvanica) are up about 2-3 inches, as are the Northern Maidenhair ferns. The Cinnamon ferns are showing their knobby beige fiddle heads a bit too, but no sign of the other kinds yet. My ostrich ferns run quite a bit so I am not surprised that you found one of yours a bit away from where you think the plant is located. Everytime I move a plant I end up with 2 more near the old location! Works out fine in my "wet" corner where other things die off, but you need to be careful in a normal garden situation. BTW, I have mine planted in full sun & because of all the wet they do just fine.

Your reindeer is very nice, paintchips! I don't think you'll regret having him in your household. He's elegant, really...an elegant, regal, classic, timeless reindeer that will grace your winter wonderland with style. He will look marvelous. He's so much more tasteful than so much of what is on display at holiday time, & it's ONE reindeer, not Santa's sleigh led by Rudolph (which my neigbor displays every year along with several snowmen, "decorative" flags, & numerous other chotkes, all illuminated by thousands of lights.) I wish you were my neighbor! I would enjoy seeing this little guy everyday & would so appreciate the restraint you practice. You really have not gone overboard, though I truly value your efforts to live simply & monitor your purchases carefully. I try to do the same. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the comfort of the throw. I bet it's really cozy & warm...good buy!

I just bought a reverse variegated one too. It's one of the better looking spiders I think.The ones I have can all fit into a 4' pot, so it has a ways to go.

Ok, I just noticed this thing between the spider leaves. I have a five different spiders but have never seen this before. Is this where leaves come out? The stem portion feels like the flower stem of a daylily.

I can't help on the ID other than tell you it's in the mint family, opposing leaves and square stems.

The spider should eventually split that leaf, it happens sometimes. When they get to growing fast sometimes the leaves can't keep up with each other and back up like that.

I was given two spiders, a few months ago by my MIL. She was fretting because she had too many. I'm not a big fan of them, because they tend to be plain, but can't pass any plant up. They tend to get spider mites really quickly and get tore up whenever we have kittens. We have five just old enough to open their eyes so it won't be long before I'll need to confine and put up everything.

The last one I had I killed. It survived the winter outside by defoliating, and lived for another year before it finally died because it got an ant nest in it. I was in one of those fazes where not any but the elite of the elite houseplants got the care, so the whole lot ants and all got thrown to the curb. I regret it now.

I bought the reverse variegated one because it had babies, I needed some babies to send off in a trade since most of my babies which I was rooting died. I figured I could give it to my MIL if I get tired of it because she doesn't have the reverse variegated.

Anyway the spider plant should be called cast iron, because it's almost impossible to kill it on neglect. Ypou have a nice looking plant, keep your eye out for spider mites, they're almost as bad as ivy in that instance.

I guess I'll just pull those viney things out then. I was thinking maybe it was some sort of flowering verbena or something and would have just added them to an outdoor basket of flowers.

Believe it or not, none of the spiders have ever been infested with spidermites. I didn't know that was a problem with these plant. Yikes!I hope they don't come around! Ivies, oh yeah, definitely a problem every time I got one, so I don't buy them, haven't for many years, don't even look at them! Too bad, because some of them are not bad looking plants.

I'm like that, can't turn away a plant, not even an ugly one, but will give it away later:O)

I have two cats, and one )male) would constantly eat almost all the ends off making them look so ragged and sick looking, and climb over other plants on a table to get to the hanging babies, what a mess, the leaves are like grass to them I guess. so all the spider were moved to my upstairs bedroom and they have since recovered.

That thick stem thing in the middle of the leaves is sure odd. Maybe it was fed with some high does of fertilizer to grow fast like that. It does have what looks like leaf points coming out the top.

On this new spider, the long stems with the small babies are kinda straw colored and it looks nice against the green and white background. I think there are names for each kind of spider out there, but really, who can remember???

Oh, Say it isn't so! Mint is one of my all time favorite plants! I wish I had a place where they could run free and spread their roots. I used to have over 30 different kinds of mint from fruit flavored, to lavender scented, to variegated, to chocolate peppermint, yum!
